Trophy Sheep 2012

I just found out I've been drawn for a trophy sheep tag for the 2012 hunt in WMU 438! WMU 438 is between Hinton and Jasper National Park. I've watched lots of trophy sheep hunts on TV over the years but have never been fortunate enough to go on a hunt. Needless to say I'm pretty excited to have my own tag! I'm still fairly new to hunting and was wondering if you guys could give me some tips/advice?

Do you know of any local Outfitters or Hunting Guides?
Have you hunted in this area in the past?
Any trophy sheep hunting stories?

I'll keep you updated and will upload pictures of the hunt if possible.
Thanks.

Jonas Guinn would be a good guide to contact. What season did you draw?

Ryry4 07-24-2012 01:32 PM

Lucky bugger. Congrats on a great hunt. You have abreast opportunity to kill a great ram with this tag.

Stewie 07-24-2012 01:38 PM

wow nice tag to have thats for sure... Just curious what priority were you…? You say you’re new to hunting and I thought this tag would take 20+ years to draw…?

Congrats on the tag though… once and lifetime draw that’s for sure…

pikeslayer22 07-24-2012 01:40 PM

There is no priority on this draw more of a lottery

438 is a random draw every year. You don't accumulate priority.

Edit: looks like Pikeslayer22 beat me.

Good luck with the tag
I meet a guy who got it last year, and only missed the book by a few inches

No real secrets to the hunt. Put your time in at one of three spots and hope a ram makes his way off the mine or out of Jasper headed to the mine. It's a game of climb and wait and hope.

Good luck. I've had the good fortune to film a hunt in 438 and it's a unique experience.

Thats a fun season to hunt for sure! Be prepared and do as much homework as you can on this one. Its not a walk in the park but if you do your wok you'll have a very good hunt.

Jonas Guinn is a good outfitter to contact if you're going that route.

I've heard a few people mention about the Mine or Mine Boundary. Where abouts is this area? Which is the easiest route to get there? What brings the sheep to this area? Thanks

You really should take a drive out there and get the lay of the land and familiarize yourself with the portion of 438 that you can hunt. Head south of Hinton on Highway 40...you can't miss it.

Ive got a question about this draw? Can i put in my "999" for wmu 410 and put in for 438 in the same year as long as i "999" my 410 draw or can you only draw one or the other?

One or the other,so if you do the 438 late season you loose out on you're priorities for you're sheep any where else.

I think if I was drawn for sheep I would immediately post "So what do these trophy sheep look like, I've seen some in a farm but do the wild ones look different?"

:)
