Lake Minnewanka Help
Hey there,
I am planning on going to lake Minnewanka this weekend and was wondering you guys had any tips. I am going to be renting a 14ft boat so I am not limited to the shore. I also have my Garmin Striker 4. I was there last weekend with my kayak and had a few follows and one bite using a crankbait. I tried jigging with my fish finder but had no follows or anything. Any tips would be greatly appreciated. Thanks! |
Get a Rapala DT30 in silver/blue. Troll the shoreline in 40-60 feet.
Stop at Wapiti Sports in Canmore and get non-lead tube jigs in white and jig same areas. Buzz bombs in pink are good. Go into the bay just around the corner from the boat rental docks and cast the tube jigs, or a 5 of diamonds. Even small Mepps in size 3 are working from shore in that bay (as of yesterday) You should get some. |

Thanks! This helps a lot. How long of a tube should I get? Also, are buzz bombs legal? I thought they were a made out of lead. |

It is unlawful to: Fish with or possess within 100 metres of park waters the following: ... - any lead tackle (sinkers, jigs, lures and flies) under 50 grams |
You can buy a National Park license at Wapiti Sports in Canmore, and they'll often give good, current advice on what's working at Minnewanka.

No problem.
Absolutely correct on the lead thing-you will get checked 75% of the time, so make sure you don’t even have something that you weren’t planning on using on your tackle box. They’re pretty serious about that regulation, I’ve even had a friend get a ticket for having a small panther Martin spinner in his fly box because it has lead in it as well. We use the 5” buzz bombs, as they’re almost 4oz. For tube jigs we use 4”. |
I’ll second what BanffJohn said, silver and blue Rapala in 40-80 feet is excellent just make sure you are trolling too fast. Casting white tubes or larger buzz mobs works as well.

White 3 inch tubes with t white lead free jig will work great this time of yr. You can get a park license as well as the lead free jigs at the Fishn Hole
What has work great for me in the past is the Chubby Dartar/ the lakers cannot leave that critter alone. I use a mid size in light brown colour. Most my best jigging luck was at the end of the lake in 20fow. Another good thing if they are out is just watch where the guide boats are. |
