North Saskatchewan River

Anybody out there having success fly fishing the nsr? I'm hoping to give it my first try in the next week or so any tips would be great. The guys at the fishin hole said the fishing right now is outstanding don't know if they meant gear fishermen chucking pickerel rigs or if that included fly folks too.

Not to many insects around this time of the year so fly fishing would be limited. Better try hellgrammites or streamers if you are fly fishing.

As mentioned, not much for insects, go chuck some big meaty flies and see what happens. Haven't had much luck on the nsr but have had some luck on other bodies of water with big white flies.

Rockies like white flies. Just getting them down to the bottom is the trick.

Goldeye have mostly migrated downstream now. Goldeye primarily being insect eaters are great to fly fish for in July/August. However streamer fishing should get you into some Walleye and pike.

Fish a dark clouser minnow or bow river bugger with a split shot and you will catch a ton of walleye and sauger with the odd pike mixed in there.

Someone told me that the NSR can damage your fly line around Edmonton, does anyone know if that's true?

Its not the cleanest river at times, but at the end of the year I give it a clean so its not really an issue at all.

There are mercury content warnings summarized in the Alberta Fishing regulation guidelines so if you're pregnant or a child would not recommend eating very much or any!

Better to go to the Costco river!
