Rod building supplies
 

Does anyone have a place to buy rod building supplies that has prices. I’m trying to budget a cost together and maybe mix and match components. My Dad is going to build it, I just have no idea on costs.
I will buy local, Like I said, just trying to get an approximate cost.

I'm not sure if there are any local shops left. I know there are many builders on this site. It would help if we knew what you wanted. For example:
- rod size and layout, length, 1 piece, 2 piece, or more
-rod use salt water or fresh water (big difference in components used)

-type of rod spinning, spin-cast bait cast, trolling, fly rod

-type of handle, at least cork versus some type of foam
-do you need the rod blank itself, if so, what do you want
-what type and brand of guides do you want to use wire, ceramic insert or more
-do you want a simple guide wrap or a custom wrap


If you can answer some of these questions, then I suspect there are local builders that can supply many of the parts you want.

Ditto for Custom Rodbuilders Inc in Victoria. I had to replace some guides on a fly rod and they sent me the correct pieces after a telephone call.

Length and layout? Depends what’s available. Weight will be a 5 weight.
Rivers, lakes and streams, no salt water.
Fly rod, that’s why the fly forum.
Cork handle, maybe scattered synthetic cork for looks (did it on my sons rod and it looks cool).
Yes, blank included. What do I want? What’s available? I’ll look and see what catches my eye.
Guide selection? Need to know what’s out and read a little more about pros and cons of each.
What do you mean by wrap? What holds the guides on? My dad uses thread and varithanes them I believe he said.

I have a lot of unknowns in what I want because I don’t know what’s available. The only known s are 5 weight and uplock double nut reel seat.

Check out Mudhole, they have a ton of stuff. Then if you want to buy Canadian buy from Rod Builder Supplies as has been mentioned, he is the Canadian distributor for Mudhole and can get anything Mudhole has. He is also very knowledgeable and will help you out, great store. Mudhole also has a ton of videos to help you out.

This is something I really want to do but I know it would just end in another addiction/hobby and I have too many already lol

I will see if I can get some pics that have been done already. Like I said, it's not me, it's my father making them. He did one for my son three years ago. I also have one of, if not the first rod he ever did from the late 70's or early 80's. A fiberglass Fenwick 8'6", 5 piece 6 weight.

The biggest reason that he started building was the grips. Neither one of us have big hands by any means but all the factory grip feel like pencils. He probably has close to 100 build under him now. Mostly freshwater rods but he has even done a handful of saltwater rods for his uncle and nephew.

The cork is natural, green, and blue.

This was the first time he had ever used anything but natural cork. Every rodhe has ever built has always had s choice of thread colors to hold on the guides, as long as it was regular red and blue. This rod he carried and I picked out metallic green and metallic blue.

Yeah, bot no online pricing. I won’t be picking any of it up, that will be my dad, I’m just trying to figure out budget.
