Have your say on daylight savings time

Daylight saving time engagement
Share your thoughts on the future of time change in Alberta.

Every year, Albertans "spring forward" an hour in March to observe daylight saving time and then "fall back" an hour in November to revert to Standard Time.

While we've observed daylight saving time for 50 years, the conversation about whether or not we should – and what this practice means – has been going on even longer.

We want to hear your thoughts about ending the practice of changing our clocks twice a year.

I find it to be pointless in modern times

tri777 11-19-2019 01:22 PM

Just voted to rid the hogwash.

Scott N 11-19-2019 01:28 PM

Voted no, please for the love of god end this pointless clock change.

Done voted one time

I voted keep the change twice a year :) what's the big deal .:thinking-006:

Au revoir, Gopher 11-19-2019 01:35 PM

Wonder why they only present two options... isn't sticking with standard time year round also a valid option?

tirebob 11-19-2019 01:36 PM

I like DST so I voted for keeping it as is. I prefer the earlier morning light to get going in the fall and the later light evenings in the spring. In the end, life will go on...

wildwoods 11-19-2019 01:36 PM

For those who advocate the switch- enjoy those late night hockey games. Hockey night in Canada will be done at midnight if we go this direction…

Leave it as is.

Thanks for the heads up. I agree that the change is no longer relevant for society. Unfortunately the survey is flawed - there should be three options:

Options provided in the public engagement survey:
1) No change, keep switching clocks twice a year.
2) Adopt year-round daylight savings time ("summer hours")

Option not provided in the survey:
3) Adopt year-round standard time ("winter hours")

The only options on the Alberta engagement page are (1) and (2). Option (2) is the same one that BC is considering. However, most biologists and psychologists that study the topic agree that more morning sun is healthier. In short, their studies find that waking up around the same time as sunrise is best/healthiest, and therefore option (3) should be the one we adopt.

Unfortunately, with a flawed survey like this, many of the results of people that want to get rid of changing clocks twice/year will just pick option 2 (no more changing!), but not really understand that there's a difference between option 2 & 3.

Here's a good article on the subject:

https://www.theglobeandmail.com/opin...time-all-year/

Quote from the article:
Quote:

Changing our clocks twice a year has little benefit, economic or otherwise, so isn’t it time to stop this antiquated practice? The good news is that some provincial legislatures agree and are currently considering bills to adopt permanent time. As experts on biological rhythms, we support the switch to a permanent time. However, in doing so, we must adopt Standard Time (ST), not Daylight Savings Time (DST, or “summer time”).

I don't care which is choosen, just pick one & let's quit
with the 'unstable in our ways' double mindedness already :sHa_sarcasticlol:

Looks like tirebob and ARG beat me to the punch.

Yes, of course the one option the government didn't include in the survey is the one that would work better for most that want to get rid of the switch (and scientists agree is better).

Adopting year-round ST (not year-round DST) would give us more early morning light in the winter.

I like to hunt after work...I hate losing that hour in the evening. I like getting up to hunt later too.

If only for this reason, I think it’s a solid justification! :)

AndrewM 11-19-2019 05:15 PM

As a parent with young kids the time change is stupid. Messes up their schedule for no reason. Same as me as an adult. Just cause the time changes doesn’t mean my internal clock has changed.

tri777 11-19-2019 05:26 PM

If this time change is voted not to change, they should move the time change to
3:30pm Fridays, then most of everyone gets off an hour earlier from work.

My question was for last minute, what’s the big deal to go to a no time change system?

You think it changes you and your kids schedule? Does it really? How about all the crap hype causing more accidents? What a bunch of hooey...And yes, I have 2 kids, 15 and 13 years of age...

Absolutely. I wake up at the same time. Time change puts me off by an hour. Same as my kids. No thinking involved. It does. Statistics say it cause more accidents. Take an hour of sleep away from sleep deprived people and you get accidents. Makes sense to me.

That extra hour of sleep doesn’t do anything for me. Go to bed at 11 and up at 6. Time change. Go to bed at 11 and up at 5. Only way to adjust is to go to bed same time and let internal clock slowly get it right.

What stats per say? love to hear where they come from? Driving 30 plus years and never experienced anything different whether it is daylight or dark..LOL

Maybe the drivers forgot to turn their lights on an hour earlier in the morning?

Common sense would prevail here...:bad_boys_20:

If it takes an hour away from already a SLEEP DEPRIVED individual, they need to seek a sleep doctor...LOL
