What is most dependable rifle setup?
Of all your shooting and hunting and the odd knock or bump, what rifle setup has served you the best without having any issues.
Cartridge, Rifle action, stock type, scope bases and rings, and scope. Anyone have stories on gear that failed too. My absolute concrete no problems ever rifle is a 308 Win Savage 10 with heavy barrel, synthetic accustock, ATRS 20 MOA rail, leupold PRW rings and Vortex PST 2.5-10x44 MRad scope. On the heavy side though, 12 pounds all together. My Browning X-Bolt is proving to be pretty dependable too, but i havent had it as long to put it through the test of time. |
Ruger No 1 in 30.06 with the Ruger scope rings.
|
Just this spring I purchased a Sharps carbine in 45-70.
Single shot, falling block with iron sights. Just can't see it ever failing :) |

Ruger #1 with Ruger Rings. The original Redfield Widefield 2-7 scope finally gave out after 37 years - the seals went and it went cloudy inside. It had more than its share of knocks and bumps and never needed adjustment. We will see if the new Leupold will hold zero as good as that old Redfield.

Winchester, Talley and Leupold.
|
Lee enfield with iron sights.
I think you could depend on that pretty reliably. |
easy
Anything mauser.Harold

AIA M10 B1 308Win topped by Leupold clone steel rings and Bushnell Trophy.
Survived a run-over with my truck and zero moved just one inch after. :D |
Tikka, talley rings, NF scopes & chambered in 300wm.

Bolt action all the way. I've done most of the last 35 years of big game hunting with a Winchester model 70 in 300 Weatherby with a Leupold Vari XII 3x9. No rifle failures, but this scope did need to get sent to Leupold twice to get repaired.

I have bin using my dads rem 700 7mm RM for a hunting rifle since about 1985. He bought in 1963 or 64,it originally had a 4x bushnell on it but now wears a 3x9 wideangle weaver.I really didn't use it very much until the last few years but it still shoots great and I have never had any problem with it.
|
Sako Finnbear in a .270 win. My was bought the first year they came out. Redfield 3x9 with the range down the side with conetrol rings. That thing is deadly accurate.
|
Remington 30-06 pump with Vortex scope now, (came with Lyman scope). Hunted with the rifle for 44 years so far.
|
Most break action single shots, with open sights WILL be the most reliable.

or a mosin nagant I'm also pretty sure I could use my H&R topper 30-30 drive railroad spikes and it would still function just fine |
any kreighoff, holland and holland, purdy, grula etc etc double rifle with express sights would be my go to choice if ever to have a "ultra dependable rifle"
but for now my dependable rifle is my tikka t3 in 222 wearing a 3x9 sightron |
"Dependable rifle " set up sounds like military to me ...
AK47 I guess.. For hunting Winchester mod 70 Leopold VX3 vs Boone @Crocket all what I need ... |
I buy a rifle and prep it for the out doors.
Getting the barrel free floated on zero stress bedding, pick up some mid quality rings and optics that seems to take the knocks in life. I bump the scope around a few times, that way I know its planted solid. Remington, Winchester, Mauser and a few others have all performed good. I use dry graphite powder, or light sewing machine oil on the trigger parts, so far so good in that department. Alot can be said for a mid too high quality rifles as they seem to grind along with what us humans put them threw. Don |
My Daisy Red Ryder with copper plated BB's... another 2nd generation+ rifle still going strong
|
Ruger M77 with sights from the tang safeties to the current hawkeyes. Very solidly built rifles
|
No.5 Lee Enfield- short, powerful, accurate, and as bullet proof as you can make a rifle.

My go to is my Savage 111 in 7mm Rem Mag. No Accustock, no Accutrigger. Had the 3-9x40 Simmons on it. Upgraded to a 4-16x50 Hawke Sidewinder SR Pro. Got the gun as a grad present back in 2009. That rifle has being through more in the past 8 years then I can imagine. Have always shot Winchester 160 Gr Accubonds through kt. Taken several deer and my first moose. Always the one I grab from the safe when I go out. Not the fanciest or most high end rifle but it's proven itself dependable.

All my rifles have been dependable except a break action. It was even dependable until it wasn't.
