My First Ever Chinook Salmon was biggest one at West Coast Kayak Angler Series derby!

Words Cannot describe the thrill I had when I saw this Salmon rise from right below me. This chinook is my first one, First pacific cod and biggest rockfish i've ever caught.

For anyone looking into Kayak angling I highly recommend it! The sit on top kayaks are extremely unsinkable and self scupping. If you guys were looking to purchase a yak use stringtheoryanglings discount code at aquabatics edmonton and calgary. I believe they have incentives for preordering one for early next spring.

Can anyone also tell me if this fish is a pink or coho?

EDIT * I also forgot to mention, This chinook won me a fishing package from PureFishing. Penn fierce 3 reel, rod, spiderwireline a Buzzbomb package and some numerous other things.

Cool trip and congrats on winning the derby. I’ve tried fishing for Chinook out of a kayak a couple times but to be honest haven’t caught one yet so I can tell you it isn’t an easy feat.

I knew a guy who is since deceased that caught a 50+ pound Chinook out of a kayak in Rivers Inlet 25 years ago. He was a die-hard kayak fisherman long before it became popular like it is now. They got a good picture from another boat of him in the kayak with the Tyee lying over it, then he let it go. It was the picture his family posted with his obituary so you can tell how much it meant to him.

As for wether the below salmon was a coho or pink it is really hard to say. I’ve watched the split second of video over and over and I’m leaning towards coho because I couldn’t see any spots on the tail and to me it looks and fights like a coho, but who knows. I’ve caught literally thousands of each and it could go either way.

That one looks like a coho to me. The way it jumped and the tail looks silver and bright white belly. Face looks like a coho. Then that other one goes and jumps behind you looks like a coho too and they typically school together so I'd say you lost a coho.https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/202...3f1ba30234.jpg

Nice work! Congrats on the PBs! That is an awesome win. Looks like picking up the kayak was a great move for you :)

That is a huge rockfish. That pacific cod is a very decent size as well. Looks you really nailed some nice fish.

I agree with Brandon on the lost fish as likely a coho. There is not a lot of footage though but zoomed in just before the it got off and didn't see any of the telltale big oval spots that are obvious on pink salmon.

Thanks for sharing .

Well done. Some great looking fish. I've only ever caught rockfish (rougheye I believe) like that when halibut fishing deep. Their innards are usually hanging out by the time they come up.

Job well done Huy!
Congratulations on the win.

No doubt! That one really caught my eye just due to it's size.

Looks like a GREAT trip, congrats!

HuyFishin 09-28-2020 04:05 PM

Hey thank you everyone!! The rockfish filet was very very thick. One of the most delicious meats I've eaten sofar this trip. Chinook was also very moist and fatty. Coho I caught yesterday was on the dry lean side .

I need to get back to Vancouver island next year, want to go live there for a month in the summer and get some salmon, halibut and ling cod from my kayak. Was going to go this year but covid and work interfered...
