crossbow noobie
 

I am a long time bowhunter but cant recall ever even holding let alone shooting a crossbow. My wife just got her crossbow permit for a birth defect in her wrist and i am looking at getting her into shooting. I am likely going to look for something used just to see how she likes it. Any tips on what to look for and/or stay away from?

I now you said "used" and you may be able to pick up a quality used crossbow..................however, this is a great package bow for the price:

I would search for a Excalibur cross bow....they are bullet proof and wont let you down.

Bulletproof and comes with the best damned warranty in the business bar none. Never needed that, but nice to know.

Well i found a good deal ln a micro excalibur. I got 3 quills with luminated nocks that fly way different from the regular nocks so i pulled em out. Where can a guy find the flat nocks im having a hard time.

I seen those. The diameter and weight is a bit different so im not sure what effect that will have.

Were it me I would do the opposite.
Pull the standard rear nocks and replace with Luminoks.
Once you get used to the lighted nocks, they will become something you won't want to do without.
And, it makes finding them a hell of a lot easier!

I also just bought a new Ravin R10 for my wife, as it will be her first year hunting with a bow (has shot lots with a rifle).

How does a guy go about choosing a range to zero the scope to?

Also how does the magnification change the yardages? There is nothing that came with the scope to help out. We have it dialed into 1-2" at 50 yards using the first line on the scope right now and it shoots fine from 20-50yards.

Does it come with the 100 yard scope? I have the R10 package and it had everything about sighting in, in the owners manual

Start at 20 yds
 

You should sight in at 20 yds by adjusting the scope itself(elevation and azimuth). Then go back to 30 yds and use the speed ring to adjust ( elevation only). Go to further ranges to validate the speed and you are set. Each of the gradations corresponds to 10 yd increments. Suggest you shoot at a different spot on your target each time when sighting in as they are so accurate you will hit your other bolt. Enjoy.
