What aiming device for poor eyesight

Dad can’t hit a sheet of paper at 15y with v sights. Old single shot Cooley dose t have dovetail grooves. So I might have to get a new gun also.
What are the options?
He will be happy and surprised if I can find something thank you:)

Open sights are difficult when our eyesight goes.... a peep site might help if you don’t want to us e a scope. A scope would be a world of difference though

Just a normal scope or red dot or?

glen moa 02-09-2019 05:56 PM

I thinking a bolt 22 with drill and tap full size rail with a small 4x scope?

Did your dad have an eye examination?

Years ago on one of the last outings with my dad he was missing like crazy with the shotgun. I asked him what going on and he said he was having trouble seeing the birds.
When we got home I mentioned it to mom and she made him an eye appointment. Turned out his dominant eye need to ya e a cataract removed. The next time we went out he was hitting everything he pointed his Winchester at.

Father in law was over visiting one day and stated he couldn’t see out of one eye “been like that for a year boy” . After eye exam and cataract removed can see Only after promting from his daughter ! . Imagine that !

He just had his eyes checked. He needs new ones.
Nothing they can do.

That’s a bummer , a scope should help . There are lots to choose from these days .

I would think a decent scope would make a world of difference. Doesn't need to be high power or variable, just good quality. Spend some time getting it tuned in to his eyes and you'll probably both be amazed.

glen moa 02-10-2019 11:01 AM

I’ll have him try a bright scope.
Is that the best option. Only need 20y max

AMD? If so, speak with a specialist before you do anything too extreme.
Good luck.

Go with a red dot sight, they are accurate and simple to use. Even a scope with basic crosshairs requires adjusting to get the crosshairs clear and then there is eye relief and parallax to consider. A red dot is clear, unlimited eye relief, no worries about parallax and relatively inexpensive. We have used Bushnell TRS 25 and Vortex Venom red dots with good success on rimfire rifles. Best of luck to you.

Red dots are good ... but I am told those with astigmatism may see a fuzzy or oblong dot?? Under certain conditions, I wonder if a laser would work?

If he wears glasses there is a peep device that sticks on the lens so the eye is forced to focus and the sights on the rifle will clear up and they are cheap. If he doesn't wear glasses a set of safety glasses would work just as well. Shot gunners (trap) use them the most.

This is true, it happens to me. I've tried a couple different ones with the same effect. That's why I recommended a scope. Just a simple low maginifaction should be fine I'd think, works good for me.
