Cabelas

Had some cabelas vouchers for Xmas, what a pitiful stock of fly fishing gear, they seem to be downsizing the fly area

kinwahkly 12-26-2019 04:07 PM

Cabelas is awful for flytying equipment etc.

Got my ice fishing gear there and some was 45% off so had a good go....

So you fly fishing through the ice? Let us know how it works for you.:rolleye2:

maybe try using them at BassPro, since they're the same company now. About a year ago a staff member at BassPro told me they would eventually be taking gift cards and what not issued from Cabela's.

Wondered why I got skunked flyguy

You can drop a fly through the ice using two pound mono two feet behind lead shot to tease the perch, larger fly for pike and lakers.....just gotta think outside the ice hole.

Been trying my homemade water boatmen on perch this winter. Tip it with a maggot and it works well.

This ... 100%

They have been reducing their stock since the merger, before then Cabela's stock was way better than most places

Chronomids through the ice work quite well actually.
Throw on an indicator not a bobber... does that qualify as fly fishing?

I’ve done that and done it with a fly rod through an ice fishing hole.

Guess I am not the only doing this hard water fly fishing. It is always good to try different techniques to encourage the bite.

Actually the first trout I caught ice fishing was with a hand tied olive balanced leech, but I wouldn't call it fly fishing.

Techniques for fly fishing differ with habitat like lakes, ponds, small streams, large rivers, bays, estuaries, open ocean or frozen water....you tie a fly on line and use it for fishing well your fly fishing or fishing with a fly....some nice trout I have caught in the past was with a bobber and fly....fun times.

Yes, it has certainly sagged in the last couple of years. However, the Fishin' Hole has picked it up and now has a very good inventory of fly tying stuff and Reid's Fly Shop has a lot of interesting stuff that you don't find at the other local fly shops (Edmonton area).
Cabelas doesn't seem to have the hard core fly fishing outfitters like a few years ago (Norm).

I know Norm and don't blame him, no clue how they survive on what they pay them.

If you like fly fishing...support your local fly shop. Yes they are bit more expensive...but they don't sell junk and you'll get better advise.
