6x45 or 6x223
 

Good Day,

I have a Stevens 200 in .223 I would like to convert to 6x45 for my wife to use.

I have read some older threads and there seems to be a bit of a community here. I am in central Alberta and was wondering were would be a good place to start. To either buy a barrel or have one built.

I’ve had two 6x45’s, one I bought one I built. Both on the little Sako A1 action.
Both shot very well, with bullets from 55gr - 85gr but the 100’s were getting too long in that little actions magazine. For hunting I had loaded some 85gr partitions which worked well in the mag, but never had the chance to try it on game. A friend of mine actually ended up with both. Great cartridge and platform.

Loved it.

85 Grain Partitions were fine for deer.

You have to reload in order to feed it.

Life is more simple with a 243.

I run a 6x45 with 1:8 twist 20” barrel and 95 gr Berger VLD. 2600 FPS Two Whitetails last year both big mature deer both at 200 yards ish dropped them in there tracks. Bullet passed though big hole out. Small hole in.

Ive got one, a cooper stainless, 20" with 1-10 twist, :)
Ive got it back in New Zealand now, and use it as a dual purpose rifle, for small game, goats,wallabys and fallow deer, mostly shot the 75gr serria HP, or 85gr serria, must try a few partions, have shot three deer, a pig and a dozen goats now, works very good for what I am doing.
Handy we cartridge, But with the .223 fast twist and more choices, in .22 heavy bullets, doesn't offer much more than the fast twist .223 can.
5gr heavier bullet, a touch faster (50-100 fps) than the .223, is how I look at it.
More 6mm bullets, suitable for hunting, but depending on your action length, you may not be able to use them.

I actually have 3 6x45 The 2 Sako A1 and a Cooper and have one in a Rem 600 6x47 (6mm.222RemMag). I've also owned another 6x47 also rechambered and rebored by Ron Smith on a Rem 700 action. At one time the 6x47 was a premier bench rest cartridge.
The 2 on the Sako A1 really shoot well with 58gr Hornady . The one DG built also does very well with 80gr Winchester.

is the 600 a factory barrel?

I am going to build one very soon that’s lightweight and short for the kids and wife to carry.

Seems like a good one to try, brass is abundant and small charge of powder to achieve good velocity with 70-90 gr. bullets which work fine for game !! Just get with-in 200 yds. or a bit mare LOL. !! small short actions and lwt. rifle. !! JMO. Gonna build one soon, got info from DG. and go forward. Can't just have a factory plastic $400.00 one !! NO-WAY >>????

thanks. figured so; if anyone sees a factory rem in 6x47 rem i would be interested.

My wife shoots a 6-222 on a Sako action. Shoots 75 fr vmaxes at 2700 fps. It is a perfect gun for her, legal for hunting with very little recoil.

I had a 6 TCU, basically 6x45 AI, built on a savage action with a RKS 1:10 gain twist barrel. I should have went with a lighter contour barrel. It was a good shooter but was a little heavier than I wanted. I still have the reamer though.
