870 Express

I have a Remington 870 Express Magnum that will accept 23/4,3,31/2 shells. I am planning a trip to the Yukon this summer and would like to carry a shotgun with a shorter barrel and able to fire slugs. Would it possible to buy a barrel for the gun or is it cheaper to just buy a new gun.

Bear spray is cheaper

If you shop around the buy&sell or on Gunnutz, you should be able to find a used barrel for an affordable price.

An 18.5" defender barrel will fit the 870 super magnum - but that barrel will only chamber up to 3" shells. Something to keep in mind.

It's cheaper to buy a spare barrel, but not as cheap as it should be. I think the 3" is the challenge, as it's pretty easy to find slug barrels that are 2-3/4" capable. If one of those will do the trick, you can find one (CGN) in the $125-$175 range, depending on condition. I trust you want it with rifle sights, vs. a bead sight?

If you want a 3"-capable, rifle-sighted barrel..it will be more "modern" production, and the price will reflect that. They pop-up on CGN with some frequency, so I'd keep an eye on that. Better yet, put a WTB ad saying you're looking for one..and see what happens. On this site, and over there.
New, I've seen them as high as $299 (Cabela's) but I think that price is a bit nuts...considering you can find complete guns, gently used for about $100 more.

Do you want a rifled barrel for longer range accuracy or do you want the ability to fire rifled slugs out of a smooth bore just in case of a bear gets too close?

There are a few options available on the B&S if your ok with a smooth bore. Plus the smooth bore gives you the option to fire shot s well if you want to hunt some small game while your there.

Remington sells 20” express barrels, part # 24622 870, 2 3/4- 3 1/2 if you have a 3 1/2” receiver. I have 2. One with removable rifled/full/M/IC chokes and 1 with no choke- I believe it is an Improved cylinder barrel. The barrel with chokes will cost about $2-250, without chokes about $150, depending on where you can find them. Both have adjustable rear site, and shorten up the gun nicely.

I would go with the smooth barrel
