Ice thickness , auger extension ?

Are we generally gonna need a extension by Mid march ? How thick is the ice ? Slave lake, Utikama and boyle areas ? In your opinion .

Sea Hawk 02-15-2018 09:11 AM

At calling my motor was down to the snow before i got through the ice. If the weather stays cool it will not be long before you will need an extension.

vic1 02-15-2018 09:42 AM

You need extension for Slave lake already.

Mike_W 02-15-2018 09:54 AM

Everyone north of Calgary should own an extension .....much easier to drill even when not required 100%

RavYak 02-15-2018 12:16 PM

Yup if in doubt just buy one. A lot cheaper then driving to the lake to find out your auger isn't long enough...

Save 60 bucks. Make one.

SamSteele 02-15-2018 03:39 PM

I was about 4” away from needing one at Pigeon last Saturday.

Glenn D 02-15-2018 04:45 PM

Iv been using mine for couple weeks, even if you dont quite need one yet its easier on the back i find. Hopefully the bit of snow we got will slow down the ice now as long as the wind doesnt blow it all off.

FlounderPounder 02-16-2018 08:50 AM

Had 4-6 inches to spare around Boyle last weekend

What did you make yours out of and where did you get the materials? TIA

Had a millwright at the plant where I work whoop one up for me out of scrap. It’s just tubing a fitting and a bolt pretty much. Make sure everything is snug or you’ll get a bad wobble.

Sea Hawk 02-16-2018 11:58 PM

Tried lac labiche today and had to shovel the snow away to get through without an extension.

timsesink 02-17-2018 10:24 AM

I'm not sure why guys run without an extension. It's such a simple insurance. I leave mine on all year.

curtz 02-17-2018 04:48 PM

Was at Island Lake by Athabasca today, just made it through without my extension.

Davef 02-19-2018 06:56 PM

North wabasca had 33" of ice. Extension required for anytime in march this year.

SamSteele 02-19-2018 08:55 PM

I was into the extension on Slave today.

honda610 02-20-2018 06:42 AM

Glad I bought one this year. Still a couple more weeks of ice to grow.

Same for Smoky Lake area lakes yesterday, probably 2" left before extension will be needed......

old dog 02-26-2018 11:07 AM

I was at Newell a week ago and came close to needing an extension in some places. That is rare for the southern lakes for sure.

Drewski Canuck 02-26-2018 11:10 AM

Extension needed on the Jiffy and Eskimo this weekend at Calling Lake.

Not a lot of snow on the west side of the lake, ice is gonna grow for a while yet.

Sure was helpful that NSR Fisher is as tall as he is for cutting those holes with the extension on!!!!!

I'm getting to the point of bringing a milk crate to stand on!!!

Had to use an ice bar to bang out the last 1/4 of ice yesterday, extension on the way!
