winterkill????

how can i find out for sure if there has been substantial winterkill in my favorite lake? i have been fishing this lake for 4 yrs and never had been skunked untill i went out for the first time this yr 2 days ago. the water is quite murky on one end and almost smells swampy h2s like.there are still millions of shrimp alive. would they survive and the pike die?

What lake is it?

Yes, it is quite possible invertebrates like shrimp could survive with dissolved oxygen levels too low to support pike or other fish.

If it smells like the way you have described it then for sure it has winter killed. The smell comes from the rotted vegetation under the ice that didn't receive enough sunlight to stay alive.
