Goldeyes are back

Caught a 16" goldeye in the NSR today. I was fishing with small minnows on the bottom. I wasn't expecting the goldeye to return until early June.

Do any of you guys use flies on the goldeyes, and if so what kind and how succesful are you??

Thanks

FisherPotch 05-12-2008 07:09 PM

I just got a fly rod this year. Gime a month or so and I'll let you know what I'm having luck on LOL . I have a feeling that later in the year hopper imitations will produce something fierce.

I recently started a thread wondering if any one has seen them rising. I have seen some surface action this year but currently the main river is too murky. They have been sniffing out the worms or minnows on the pickeral rigs though.

For you folks familiar with the NSR can a guy fish it in a 14 ft cartopper with a 15 hp around edmonton area ( say 20 miles each way0 or would you be pranging the moter of rocks on bottom?? I'm just moving into area and would be keen to know

All I use is flies..they will attack lots of different types, wet and dry. thumbs, hoppers, Fun when the water is warmer and stand out in the river and look for the rises.

boomer 05-12-2008 08:47 PM

the two flies that work best for me
are yellow or red humpy or hoppers

ULTRAlite 05-12-2008 10:39 PM

Lotsa fun on the fly - this was a BH Hares Ear Nymph I believe

I picked up a little one tonight, on a spinner.

Hey mussy ,I seen much bigger boats on the river with a out board prop .
You might want to invest into a gps and go slow and find where it is deeper .
Also invest in a prop guard or build your self one ,works great on small 9.9
Let me know if you need a partner ,I always wanted to fish the river in a boat .

wake 05-13-2008 08:45 PM

Hit the NSR tonight at my spot.

pretty good...

7 Walleye's 15 to 21''
1 Sauger a whopping 12''
2 goldeye's
and my first quillback of the season (one of ther neatest looking sucker's out there.) Scrappy bugger too...

Muzzy, the wife and I use a 12' with an eight horse by Ft Sask. can hit bottom in several areas later in the season when water levels are low.
Good luck
Doug

John, we used to haul in lots of Gold and Saugar acroos the river in the Fort, past L'amoureaux where the Sturgeon dups into the NS, right off the bank, be careful though lots of bank erosion, fallen in more than once lol
