Custom Haying
Thought I would see if anyone has any info on the cost of Custom Haying in Southern Alberta. I have a couple 1/4s that came with the purchase of a house and rather then rent them out I thought of having them hayed and sell that. Anyone know what an average rate is for the large square bales or do they go by the acre? I put in some calls to some custom guys as well but just thought I would see of anyone on here has any experience.

is it natural?
a split is common. they come cut and bail it. sell it. and split the sale. splits vary depending on area. and if you got a neighbour on the quarter next door cutting hay it will be more favorable. isnt as good of a deal if someone has to bring equipment in a long ways. |
Go on to the Alberta Government website...Roping the Web.....then search for custom rates. You should be able to find custom rates for hay and a bunch of other things there

Is it currently in hay now or are you thinking of seeding it down?If so how old is the stand? Many mole or gopher hills? Is this irrigated or dry-land?
What has it been yielding in the past? If it's a decent crop fair value would be around $14/acre to cut and 10-$12 a bale to bale. Not sure what area you are in or where you plan to market the hay but in many cases, especially if selling locally round bales are more desirable to ranchers. The big squares are more convenient and work well for long hauls. |

What was the seed mixture ? Alfalfa ? Clovers ? Grasses ? Will it be floated this year ? Are you planning on fertilizing it ? As you can see, lots of variables that need consideration. |
