Horrendous SMELL on the Yellow Head Trail

I have worked around pretty much every type of Hydro-Carbon pumped out of or otherwise extracted from the ground from Alberta to Japan and Egypt. Up Stream Well sights to Down Stream Production and Refining plants.

But never have I smelled anything like the Stench you get when travelling the Yellow Head between Winterburn RD and the Henday over pass

It's there everyday Morning noon or night
Sometimes a bit less noticable due to wind direction.

Anyone Identify this Odor ???

Jameson340 12-13-2011 07:17 PM

I am acually a feild operator in the edmonton area, havent had any odour complaints in over a year. I know a few people say the smell may be coming from big lake, wich i am starting to believe, noticeing it more with north winds.

magnum-hunter 12-13-2011 07:39 PM

Interesting sugestion.
Could be that Sewer pond I suppose
I wonder if the smell is worse over by those nice houses closer to the lake?

That is also the other culprit...the sewer pond. It is unfortunate that they smell like sour gas lol.

just_dave 12-13-2011 08:16 PM

Hey, remember doing laps in gym class and like farting for two laps straight? I didn't but I know you did. Be honest with yourself.

Gunslinger257 12-13-2011 08:19 PM

The said smell is originating from a very large compost pile that is adjacent to the railroad tracks on the south side between winterburn road and the Anthony Hendey. If you think the smell is bad from the Yellowhead you should try going bye on the tracks on a hot summer day! It would gag a maggot!

The rumor I heard around work is that they are trucking raw sewage from the Bowden penitentiary and composting it there. It doesn't make sense to me but what do I know?

Xiph0id 12-13-2011 08:46 PM

I work couple of businesses down from them.
I've heard the sewage story as well.
The smell at my work ain't bad at all but is bad on the Yellowhead.

magnum-hunter 12-13-2011 08:49 PM

The common belief seems to be the smell is Sewer in origin.

Now the next Question I have is do any of you think the smell poses a health threat ?

(other than puking a bit in your mouth as you drive by the area and inhale the smell)

eastcoast 12-13-2011 09:16 PM

I used to work very close to that smell, I don't know what it is but I do know it could knock a buzzard off a s**t wagon.

skidderman 12-13-2011 09:21 PM

Dropped a load of sawdust there more than once. If you think it's bad from the highway you should go there. They mix sewer with dirt, sawdust and who knows what else. I believe the end goal is high quality black compost or dirt. Got the crap on my shoes once and could not bring them in the house. Be happy you don't work there.

Sundancefisher 12-13-2011 09:48 PM

The smell is from the compost. We have been getting hundreds of calls about this and alberta environment finally got involved. Very high H2S levels.

They accept manure so time to call the city and complain to make them somewhat compliant. i agree it may be valuable to compost but my word it is nasty and getting out of hand. Every day I have to open my windows once I pass. Henday southbound just off merge Yellowhead
