fly fishing the NSR in winter

Was curious if anyone has ever had any luck fly fishing the NSR at this time of the year? Would really like to catch something on the fly.

Went up to Jasper two weeks ago. 10 miles into the park I passed a guy packing up his fly gear. I assumed he was trying the open water on the Athabasca. Checked the regs if I'm not mistaken that portion is opened until end march.

I have tried, not this season. I found little open water, but I didn't travel far. My fingers always froze, and I have never caught a fish. When the ice breaks up and the lakes are closed I have caught gold eye. I'm a bad fisherman, maybe you'll do better. It's good just to throw a line though.

re: flyfishing in river

Just an FYI, if you are in the city limits, theres a good chance you will have Fire Rescue and/or EPS respond to you. Being on river ice is incredibly dangerous, and if you go out, you will be putting First Responders in danger too. You will be removed from the river bank wether you want to be or not. Food for thought.
