Questions: Long Range Rifle
Im shooting a 300win mag tikka t3 lite. currently I'm using 180gr nosler accubonds running 2720fps, but i want to go hotter and possibly a lighter bullet. Any Suggestions?? I wanna put a heavy barrel on with a muzzle break along with a different composite stalk. my main questions are what is the best aftermarket barrel out there, and what twist rate is the sweet spot for long shots. And my main applications will be long range target shooting and long range hunting.

FYI ...long range go with a bigger bullet, the bigger the better, not smaller . if your rifle likes it.it may seem better at shorter ranges (and it is ,but the smaller bullets lose out at the end/long distance)
get a ted gallard barrell or bob jury barrell.........about 400 bucks for it then +++ for install at a smith or so. stock...lol...... 1 in 10 is the usual twist im pretty sure for 300s..... maybe a 1 in 9/9.5 could be bought /ordered/ideal. |
Muzzle velocity low
Your velocity seems quite slow for a .300 Win. Mag. Previous poster is correct. To retain your ''long range'' capability 190, 200 and 210 grain bullets. I have a pal who is using the 210 Berger with Retumbo powder. Might keep an eye out for the Nosler LONG RANGE Accubonds that apparently are trickling into the country and at various dealers(not mine)

What bullet weight would you recommend for a 338 Win Mag for long range shooting. I have been getting pretty good results with 210 gr. but have not really tried anything heavier.

Hunting or hitting bullets?

Retumbo works and H-1000 is good too for 1000M use and more. My rule of thumb is heavier for longer is better too. Just worth 2 cents |
Ron Smith Barrels

Best guy in the area will make and install barrels of any kind and you supply the cash. Had a gain twist barrel in 6.5 made for my 6.5-06, not cheap but he does great work out at Wimborne area. |

Yup Bob is a local gunsmith and his business is Custom Gunworx, he's east off the Beaverflats roads. He does great work and uses Jury barrels from Bob Jury in Red Deer.

Bob Galloway
Yes, I've heard Bob is topnotch and so are the Bob Jury barrels!

I will vouch for the statement above. LC |
If it were me , I would try to define what my longest ranges would be that i could shoot accurately then go from there.
To some , when they talk about long range, they are speaking of shots that are at the 400 yard mark. For others it is past that. IMO a 1800 grain bullet of proper construction is quite fine out of a 300 mag at 500 yards, as long as the shooter is capable - THAT is the biggest variable in the whole danged equation. Soooo, how far?:) Cat |

300 win mag, 1000 yards, = 190gr berger VLD.

When I was shooting those distances with a 300WSM, I used 210 Alberta Wildcats in a 30" McPhee barrel and a 1:10 twist. Worked fine right out to the mile. The World 1 mile record was held for some time by a 7WSM IIRC, with a Shilen barrelled Savage. Cat |
bullet weight
and bigger bullet im guessing is mainly just for less wind drift??

Throw a wiffle ball as hard as you can at the garage wall. Then grab a baseball and throw it as hard as you can. Not pure science but you get the idea. |

got my 308 and 338 edge customedgunworxed one has a ted gallaird barrel(308) and other a jury barell(338) 4 " groups at 1000 yards -308 ,175 gr smk .6/.7 " groups at 300 yards -338 (finally got h-load for the thing,317 rounds later, ouch ,expensive, but thats the game),next spring gonna get her humming out to a mile ,allready have b4 but with a hasty handload/different bullet/huge target. it doesnt like sierra or berger 300 grain bullets but loves hornady 285s ,wierd , .7 g1 bc,so it will really retain its energy for 1760 yards..........and beyond. |

What would you recommend? For the most part a 500 yard shot is my max. when hunting, but am curious if I would be better off using something heavier than the 210 TTSX Barnes, which is what I have been getting good results with. I might consider further shots if I new from an ethical point of view I could hit what I'm shooting at where I need to hit it. |

my 308 wears a bushnell elite 6500 2.5-16 x 42mm, reticle is a bit on the thickish side for long range.....but a 3 shot group that measures 3.975 " at 1040 yards, guess it does the trick. has 59 moa adjustment up zeroed at 200.on a 20 moa rail my 338 edge wears a nighforce BR 8-32x56 mm ,npr 2 reticle i think...the one with less lines and are 2 moa line to line vertical @ 22 power. it has finer reticle ,but only 50 moa internal, its mounted on a 30 moa rail so i need to zero for 400 yards come this spring now that ive settled on its load. |

his bullets at the time were 225 grain hunting bullets IIRC. I have done quite a bit of loading in the past for a fella that used the 180 XLC Barnes and he has killed moose WAY out there witu this rig. it is braked however Cat |

Thanks guys. |
Bob has a great design for big brakes for the Edge. My edge was the first one in the Rocky area and seemed to have started a bit of a fanatical following. Very pleasant to shoot with the brake on it. I'm shooting 300 Gr Berger OTM's. So far the longest distance I've shot is 1853 yards, and I have a Sightron SII Bigsky 6-24X scope on it.
