remington 700 vs tikka t3

Hey guys,

Looking for some advice on rifles. I want to buy a bolt action center fire rifle chambered for 300 win mag. The two that I have narrowed it down to are the Tikka T3 stainless and the remington 700 stainless. As far as I can tell, they are pretty similar. Any recommendations?

Tikka all day everyday. Nuf said

The Tikka has a better trigger than the new Remingtons, and the quality is generally better, but in 300winmag, the recoil won't be pleasant with a T-3. The Limbsaver recoil pad is a must for the Tikka, but it still won't be all that pleasant to shoot.

osterhob 05-09-2016 07:09 PM

Okay. is the rem 700 better on recoil due to weight or something else?

Mateo 05-09-2016 07:21 PM

Weight. The only advantage a lightweight rifle has is for carrying. Other than that, all advantage goes to a heavier rifle.
We use both the R700 and the T3 in my family. If you are the kind of guy who likes upgrading his gun and playing around with it, the R700 has the most aftermarket options available. If you are looking for a good stock rifle that's a pleasure to carry and you won't shoot a bunch throughout the year, get the T3. Both are accurate with the right ammo.

Remington 700 all the way! :)

morinj 05-09-2016 07:22 PM

You will not be upset buying one or the other, tikka has a smoother bolt, and known for superb accuracy, where as a Remington 700 has many upgrades, so if you are looking for a rifle you want to just shoot out of the box, hands down go with the tikka, however if you are looking for a rifle that you can upgrade very easily go with the Remington 700!

osterhob 05-09-2016 07:26 PM

okay thank guys. this has given me some stuff to think about:)

If you go with the Tikka, think about upgrading to a titanium recoil key.

The new T-3x have steel recoil lugs, and a metal bolt shroud. They also have an improved recoil pad, but I haven't fired one yet to see how much better it is.

Remington but see if you can find an older model one.

Kurt505 05-09-2016 08:32 PM

I would get a Tikka if it was for myself.

pikeslayer22 05-09-2016 08:44 PM

Remington gets my vote

H380 05-09-2016 08:47 PM

We have both models of 300 wm. in our family , the remmy has been back for warranty and the tikka hasnt . Tikka has a nicer trigger and is more accurate but slightly more recoil before the limbsaver was added . Tikka is much lighter weight and nicer to pack . Both models are nicer than the heavy Ruger the SIL carries ..:sHa_sarcasticlol: sorry cowboy ,, couldnt resist . :)

Tikka all seven days of the week.

Smokinyotes 05-09-2016 09:33 PM

If your worried about recoil in a Tikka buy a laminate and put a limbsaver on it.

BigRedJeep 05-09-2016 09:36 PM

Love my tikka. The remmy I just picked up has yet to impress me. I got it to have a custom someday.

T3 will bite a bit, but both are good.

Gade81 05-09-2016 10:19 PM

both are good rifles. I have 2 tikkas after selling a newer 700 cdl. Shoulda never sold it. Some will come on and state that tikka is more accurate, but thats probably only sometimes the case. After spendign some time shooting both, i prefer my remington. Was more accurate for me, felt better to shoot, and better trigger. Do prefer the shorter bolt throw on the tikka

Tikka all the way, they are also on sale for 20% off at most major retailers right now.

Remington 700's can suffer from this....... a Tikka never will. This brought an unfortunate end to my sheep hunt one year.

rough bastard, :sHa_shakeshout:

I would go with a CDL or BDL, Remington, if its one of the cheaper Remington lines, tikka.

That and the short detachable mag , leaves little option for seating bullets.
Remington's lately are a coin toss as far as quality goes, then you can bank on a timmney or other after market trigger, and at the very least bedding the stock.
I have a good buddy with a Tikka T3 in 300WM it's not fun off the bench, it is still his favorite to go hunting with .

wolf308 05-10-2016 07:27 AM

Either / or

Whichever one fits you , your cheek weld and your shoulder the best ! And the one you find the most aesthetically pleasing to your eyes ( am I right guys )

I've got multiple 700 s and 1 t3 ...... All great guns , all shoot great.

If for going in the mountains soon or one day the focus should be on wt reduction .... But a 300 win mag ..... Only so much

My 2

rembo 05-10-2016 07:28 AM

Get the Tikka. But don't get a 300 Win Mag....get a 270, or if you must have a 30 caliber get a 30-06. If you must have a magnum get the 7 Rem Mag, your shoulder will thank you later. The game won't know the difference.

sns2 05-10-2016 08:37 AM

Get a 30-06 and put a limbsaver on it. 300 Mag in that gun is just not necessary.

PS: Be sure to let us know how many animals get away because you didn't have a 300 Mag.

Ice Fishing Maniac 05-10-2016 08:50 AM

Tikka gets my vote. I will through in the Sako A7ss for you to consider. In the package deal with scope is a great buy.

ol whitey 05-10-2016 09:09 AM

I love my tikkas great triggers and very accurate.

okemo 05-10-2016 10:49 AM

If buying new go with the Tikka. I have on in left hand, T3 lite SS 300wsm and its 3 bullets touching off the bench. Put a limbsaver on it and recoil is manageable. I also have a late 70s left hand Rem 700 BDL in 30-06 and its real nice and groups under an inch.

But all the new Rems I have handled and shot don't have the build quality the older ones do.

fordtruckin 05-10-2016 12:18 PM

Other food for thought,
Do you prefer a rifle with a mag vs one with a floor plate?
Do you want the ability to load the rifle one at a time through the ejection port, because the ejection port on the T3 is much smaller than the R700.
As already mentioned what is the chance your going to customize it, the R700 will lead a bit in that department.
The T3 also comes in 2 different wood stocks if your not into the T3 lite stock.

I'll stay out of which one I'd recommend, and say shoulder them both and pick the one that feels better. For the most part depending on the model of 700 you pick, I doubt you'd go wrong with either one.
