1000 meters check!
2 Attachment(s)
AS some of you may know I have been chasing a very specific shooting goal. I have been trying to make a hit at 1000m for about 2 years. Well today was the day!!! I started at 700M and got a nice sub moa 3 shot group. I painted the target and moved it to the 1000m mark. I went back to my shooting position and fired 3 shots. I hit on 2 of them !!!! whooot!!! I drove down repainted the target and decided to send 5 more. I hit on 4 out of the 5. SO 6 out of 8 total. During the 5 shot group the wind dropped right down and I fired 3 in fairly rapid succession. I got a 4 inch stinking group!!!!!! I was so happy I couldnt believe it. I am a pretty proud shooter today. Mission acomplished.

Nice! What are you running for equipment?

Great work. Practice. Persistence. I think each goal we set starts to enter the realm of reality when we start to feel comfortable.

Good job mark, nothing like seeing those first hits at distance.
A well planted rifle and low winds sure help. I just got my 3rd rifle hitting the 1000 m yesterday day, then pizz poor results on the 1500 today. Ha Oh well, my other 2 units are dialed in, then I'll get this new rig sorted next spring,,, both of my main shooters will get the big work overs as I change out a barrel on 1, then build my first M40a1 rifle out of the second unit,,, Ha. Nothing like having the A1, a3, and a5,,, kinda like having triplets. Awesome job brother, good times come one step at a time. Don |
Great job, big congrats.
I’m glad you made it, I’ve been following your journey. |

I haven't decided yet as I'm slowly looking into what's out there first.
The stock on a M40a1 is suppose to be wood, my MCR F Stock will work for this application, it might new some timing up front. Yes, the a3 and a5 will need something like those Macmillan stocks, I see that your stock looks similar to the M series units. The M5's normally come with the adjustable check risers like the yours again. Thats a nice option to have Mark, you mentioned the stock you used in the above post,,, I'll definitely look at that fore sure. So long as the Macmillan stock front forearm section dosen't flop around like a wet noodle, then I'd be game on them. |

Markg. Congrats. I’m trying to learn.
Can you tell me about your shooting position. Your rests. Bags. Total Weight of gun. How much movement do you see of your crosshairs on the target. Thank you. |
Great work and nice shooting, way to stick it out the 2 years and not lose the drive! Nice rifle set up, you will have to try for 1200 now!

Good for you. I have been following you as well. Gotta love the 6.5X47. Have you tried any other bullets like 130-140's? One of my X47's loves the 130 Berger Hunting. H4350 out of a 26" Broughton gets me 2950 fps.

Don't you just love it when things come together.

Thanks for the link to Red Stat Mark, I'll definitely look them up. That is one nice looking stock fore sure.
I had Criss from MCRS stocks in Calgary build me a extra long F Class stock last year, he added a few extras inches out front for the bypod since he makes each rifle stock from "blank stock" that he makes him self. Choose the woods as he makes a stock with the colours you like, then he cuts the pistol-grip so a right or left handed person can shoot the rifle from either side which is a plus for me since I run off of either side when I'm shooting. http://www.mcrstactical.com/WoodTacT9.html And http://www.mcrstactical.com/WoodTacT9Classic.html Yes, the first 2 rifles,,, A3 and A5 will be heavy. I'll follow the weight category when I build the A1 since it will be my go-to hunting and general plinking unit. My friend is on board with this as we build him a rifle to. He's not a hunter, so I would guess that he'd choose the target shooting unit for his shooting needs. The A3 & 5 will need a bit of weight to keep them planted,,, loooooong stiff fore-end with no flex, with 2 new optics on them. Most likely the 6-24 scopes, I don't mind my 3.5-14 Vortex, but the 8" gong is challanging to see past the 1000 mark,,, very difficult at the 15 and 17 mark. This is where my Sightron comes in handy. |
Good questions

https://youtu.be/weBuYmnpg38 I hope you and others that are trying to achieve the same goal find this helpful While trying to do this I knew my shooting technique was fairly good but I couldn’t see my misss. So I bought a bigger target (IPSC) this helped a lot as well. I must have been barely missing the target but it’s likely that my group size was reasonable small. I would recommend buying as large of a target as you can afford or build for that distance and then once your on it work at reducing group size. Thanks to everyone who has followed my journey and I hope some of the things I have learned I can share. Thank you to a Avery knowledgeable bunch on this forum that have offered up some excellent advice on how to get there. |
All good info thanks. In my field position (hunting) I’m seeing 1/4 of movement at 100y.

Yuppers, I do 3 dry fires on the 1000 meter target using the Henery Remple Bypod / solid rear bag.
If the X stays on the V ring, I get at it. The plan is to always shoot vertical, and attempt to read the winds. If I get it right, a presentable group shows up My favorite pattern is called the thin football, the more wind the longer the ball. LOL. Those winds from 15 to 25 mpr... Its kinda like throwing a curve ball to get it across the plate. Ha I give alot of credit to my rifle builder friend since my land canon is 18.1 lbs/ 8.25 kg's. The next builds will be a bit lighter than this. I'll admit that a heavy package stay well planted with ends days of consistent shots fired. |
Thats fantastic ! and tenacious work, great job !!
|
Congrats !
Good feeling hey ! |
Hope
I am just hoping we get some nice weather soon so I can go out and try again. Not that i have done it I want to repeat it!!
|
Did it again
Went out again today and managed 2 Hits in 10 shots (1000m). Not great but it was a strange wind sometimes it was from behind and to the right and others behind and to the left. I definately need to be better at reading the wind. I might also consider a different load, maybe try the 140 ELD-M I would have to dial a bit more elevation but wind should be less of a factor.
|
How much wind are you dialing at 1000 yds? For my 6.5X47 with 130 Berger hunting this is my data: UP 25.6 MOA
DRIFT for 90 degrees 10 mph 6.5 MOA Velocity 1574 fps |
Dialing
I am dialing between 9.0 and 9.5 Mils of elevation depending on atmospheric conditions. with a 5 MPH I think I am around 1.0 and 1.5 mils
Velocity is around 2950 shooting 123 scenars. Although that was my summer velocity, with the cooler weather it might be down around 2930 I should get out and do a check with my chrony. |
