If buying a 257 wby make sure it has a 26” barrel.

I don't see the point in a 24" barrel on a 257wy, but that is what the Vanguards come with.

Ruger number 1 has a 28 inch tube on it should get a couple hundred feet per second more. I do like my mark 5 also

Smokinyotes 11-20-2018 07:02 AM

I’m seriously contemplating selling all my rifles except for the 257wby and 300wm. I’m shooting 110 accubonds at 3505 FPS and with a 300yd zero it’s basically hold on hair to 400. I shot a coyote at 386 yards last week. I haven’t shot a deer with the 257 yet but I’m hoping that happens in the next 10 days.

bezzola 11-20-2018 09:13 AM

I have 2 mark v one in w57 and the other in 300wm
My father in-law fell in love with the 257

Mind sharing some load info?! I’ve just loaded some 110 ELDX with RL22, hoping to finish load development after hunting season.
Getting 3600fps currently though with 100gr Norma SP’s.

I had good luck with H1000 and the 110gr Accubond. If you finish load develop in cooler weather, be aware that R-22 is very temperature sensitive, and you may have issues in warm weather.

The newer vanguards have a 26" barrel.

Agreed. when they made the 6.5/300 in a vanguard, I guess they decided it had to have a 26" pipe. So, they now make all the magnums with a 26".

Don_Parsons 11-20-2018 08:37 PM

My friend in central Alberta is at Year 40 with his 257 Weatherby. Strictly for hunting only.

He has some pretty nice critters in his collection from all around the world.

1 gun that does it all. He's been blessed by the Harvest God's. Ha

Mind you, his old time hunting partner is at the same level and years with his 270.

They could fill a museum with their 2 collections combined.

EZM 11-20-2018 09:12 PM

It's probably my favourite cartridge - easy to shoot with moderate/low recoil, very flat, accurate in both my guns and will dispatch anything from antelope up to elk/moose (although I usually use the 300 WBY if I'm hunting elk or moose).

A Vanguard with a stainless 26" barrel and action will run you under $1000.

I just bought another one (my son "inherited" my other one and won't give it back!!!!).

Good on the boy. I may have done the same to my uncles 300wby in a remmington 700, and its made me curious about the 257 to change it up from my 270w

My Mark V Ultalight will print one hole groups with Horn 117 grain bullets at 3400 with 2 grains under book max of 7828SSC, which is very temp stable. No pressure signs at all at 25 C.

There is one for sale on CGN for 800, Vanguard with Nilkon Prostaff variable 4x12 in Talley rings. Looks like a 26" tube, claims 20 rounds through it. Claims to be as new. Seller has 369 trader ratings.

Thx for the heads up idea on this Bezz, nothing like sharing the spirt of good times with others in our own group.

A few 25/06's will put the Grin on a few of my friends faces this year.

bezzola 11-21-2018 09:31 AM

We ended up buying him a 25-06in a weatherby vanguard s2

Don_Parsons 11-21-2018 10:18 AM

Frugal priced and fun to shoot.

Double thumbs up for that catrage.

And a endless supply of brass to.

Whatever choice u make is all good in the long run. That said, a 25-06 is NOT a 257 Bee. Lots of good arguements for your pick but if aĺl out performance is the criteria then the Bee was the better option.

Few people ever shoot a hunting rifle enough to Kak a barrel. Might as well have the best performance. Same reason I shoot a 7 ultra is why I choose the Bee 257. Don't care if I have to put a new barrel on it every few years. The smack down it does on game is well worth it.

Hope the 25-06 gives you the results you are looking for.

Been shooting 115 Berger vld backed with imr 4350. Not much runs away from this load combination.

I’m running the same pill being pushed by H1000. It’s been nothing but extremely lethal thus far.

I don’t own a 25-06. I believe if you run a 25-06 at the same velocities that I am getting with the 257 you will have significant pressure signs.
