Good Single Shot 20 Gauge Suggestions
 

Hi there everyone, I am sorry if there is already a thread about this but I could not find one. Recently my 13 year old sister told me that she would like to get into hunting, which is super exciting for me as I am the only person who hunts in my family and am super glad to pass on my knowledge and experience to her. I would like to get her a 20 GA to learn how to shoot as she would like to go goose hunting with me and she is a lot smaller then I was at her age; however I grew up shooting 12 GAs, and I have no experience with 20s whatsoever. I feel that a single shot would be excellent to help instill trigger and shot discipline. It would also minimize the cost of how expensive 20 GA rounds have got. We would be hunting geese/ducks and upland birds. If you have any suggestions as to what a good shotgun for this application might be, I am interested in both higher quality and budget options. I use a single shot 20 ga for my grouse hunting (dont hunt migratory) wicked little gun! my 14 year old loves it. Picked mine up at Canadian tire for $139. Its a Chiappa. that being said, 20ga ammo is almost as hard (for me anyways) to find ammo as 410. I used the exact same gun in 12 ga for grouse prior to the 20 and it worked equally as well. Just need to pattern the gun so you or your sis can learn to take head shots to avoid destroying the whole bird.

The Steven’s 301 consistently gets good reviews online it comes in 410 / 20 ga and 12 ga for about $275 . Has screw in chokes and usually comes with a Modified choke.
Personally I would get the 12 ga. A lot easier to find ammo and you can shoot cheap target loads with minimal recoil. Really not that much different than a 20 ga. Put a good recoil pad on it and it will help considerably.

For another $150 get her a Winchester sxp pump shotgun. A repeater is likely where she will want to end up anyway and she can shoot it as a single shot by only putting one shell at a time in the gun .

There has to be a cheaper over/under out there.....would be my route to go.

Most single shot shotguns are very light, which means more recoil, especially with higher powered waterfowl loads. While they do cost more, a gas operated semi auto, like the Mossberg SA20, offer much less recoil, and you can use them as a single shot as well.

I agree. They are a very good no frills utilitarian shottie. I have had mine for 35 years now…..

In case you have a suitable crack barrel 12ga, keep in mind a 12 to 20ga adapter.

Or 12 gauge minishells. With a heavier 12 gauge gun, and a light load, recoil will be less than an equivalent load in a lighter shotgun.
