So far, no luck

I have this great recipe for porcupine

Spent the day in the bush but didnt see one. No rabbits either

Back at it tomorrow!

I plan on hunting SOMETHING in every month of 2021. This month is porcupine.

Not sure what next month will be. I havent thought that far yet....

roper1 02-22-2021 10:07 PM

Porkies are everywhere around here. Hard on the trees.

Not many rabbits though, and usually we have lots. Haven't seen even one to check the color phase & make me think winter is done........:thinking-006:

Saw one east of Sherwood today. Man your pallet must be made of leather!

Head out along the creek bottoms..... I saw lots this November while chasing Roosters ...... luckily always managed to keep the dog away

This, saw a pile in ravine bottoms

If your goal is to kill one in February and you don't, I guarantee you'll run one over in March.

What did you get last month?

Me too!

Heres a thought: If Randy takes some pictures to go with his escapades, he could publish it with recipes as "Huntinstuff's Culinary Calendar"! :sHa_shakeshout:

Lol

"A Critter In Every Pot"

A good campaign slogan. Larry Darryl and Darryl

KegRiver 02-23-2021 10:09 AM

A meal that comes with it's own toothpicks.

What's not to like?

I take it you've done that before, Keg? Brilliant!

Much respect Sir,
I have always wanted to try porcupine but not to the point of blasting one. I have had the thought of now what? when thinking about shooting one.

curtis_rak 02-23-2021 04:20 PM

Roland Welker from the last season of Alone bbq’ed a porcupine and it looked amazing considering how rudimentary the “bbq” was. Threw it whole, right into the fire.

And his line was classic- as he was chewing on it he called it a fat, greasy, bastard. Lol...

Id Maui marinade it in an InstantPot

But i gotta get one first

Once you skin it tho, always burn the hide/quills. Dont need animals getting hurt afterwards

Gboe8 02-23-2021 06:54 PM

I really enjoy porcupine. Good luck. My problem is cleaning then I aways hurt myself lol.

You'd probably have more luck bagging a porcupine than a deer or moose:scared0018::sHa_shakeshout:

sns2 02-23-2021 07:53 PM

In all seriousness, Gboe8 is as successful as any hunter I know.

Think outside the box....roadkill. it's cold out. Will stay nice and fresh.

There are some folks looking for quills/hair for crafts. May be worth your trouble rather than burning them.

Good luck in your search, I have seen 2 in the last 10+ years around the Hinton/GC area. Sounds like creeks in the prairies are the place to look.

July or August could be gopher and a recipe on how to make pemmican.

huntinstuff 02-27-2021 02:54 PM

One porcupine
One bottle of Maui Marinade
Some onion
Sprinkle of salt

Quartered up and put it in the Instant Pot

Served with fried potatoes and asparagus

I will definitely do that again. It was tender, has a bit of flavour like minty pine (not sure how else to describe it

Next time I think I might use mint sauce, like you would do with lamb

I think next month will be marinated beaver cubes and fettucini alfredo

Red Bullets 02-27-2021 03:09 PM

Start skinning a porcupine like a beaver, from the belly.

Stretch the hide like a beaver and dry. Load the dried hide as a trap in a place that if an intruder comes in the hide slaps the perp in the leg or arse.

tip of the day:
A single small quill makes a great indicator on a fly line or bigger quill used a float for still fishing with bait. The giant african porcupine quills make great floats for bigger baits. A fish can pull a quill down easily with little resistance.

That *****ly ***** tastes like pine because he ate all the bark off of my pine trees. (And a couple spruce, an apple, and a few cherry trees)
There is a strict "shoot on sight" order for porcupines around here.

Dewey Cox 02-27-2021 06:58 PM

I'm glad there is one fewer.

If you've ever had to pull quills out of a horse or a dog nose, you'll know what that's about.

Grizz

Pulled many a quill outta dog's, horses, cows and myself and still like porky's. Easy to catch and transport to a different 1/4 when they get in the tree's at home.

Just curious what made it into the pot in March and what's the plan for April?
