First Bow for my 5 year old
 

So my little man is turning 5 in may and wants a bow like daddy. I am wondering what you guys would recommend for him. I'm not looking to spend over 250 for it. Thanks everyone.

For a just turning 5 year ol any bow at can tire will do. Hes not going to be able to pull much weight and prob wont shoot more than 5 or 10 yards.

For his age, just go to canadian tire and try out some of the lesser poundage bows.
I wouldnt get anything over 15 pounds.
If i remember correctly they have a bow that adjusts between 8-15 pound draw.
I wouldnt be looking for anything near the couple hundred dollar mark yet...

Diamond Atomic or something like a bear Scout would be great. Keep it simple and easy for your kid to pull.

Cheap low draw weight recurve. This is how I started and so did my son.

At 5 he is just going to want to fling arrows but if he is willing to listen teach him basic form.

Keep it fun and work up from there

If you think he is going to take a legitimate interest that the Diamond Atomic is the way to go. My six year old shoots his all the time and has it set at 12 lbs.

300 is a bit pricey to start out with but my son will most likely shoot this bow until he is 12

My 4 year old shoots the Diamond atomic. We were out shooting gophers on the weekend. Its not a toy.he never hit one but it will go past 10 yards very easily. Big pluses are it comes as a package,down to 5 lbs pull, adjustable draw, not too heavy not too long. Last summer we pounded a starling with it. He loves it and he is safe with it. Plus he can shoot it until he is old enough to get an APA.

It's either that or a nice little long bow or recurve.

The bows my kids had before the atomic were the Martin Tiger. 5-15 lbs. They were ok, buy they grew out of them fast. If he's got any muscle at all, the atomic is the way to go.

Keep it simple and keep it fun. My oldest started with a Samick Shadow youth bow, very well made, light and with the proper arrows it can really shoot!! My youngest started with a Samick Angel which is an awesome little bow but really hard to find these days. The boys are now 9 and 7 and have graduated to the Hoyt Ruckus and the Diamond Atomic but I'm not sure they would have learned to enjoy archery as much had we jumped into the compound. I think it's great your getting a starter bow for your son. My 4 year old grandson really thinks it fun to shoot his little xbow and the pellet gun. I can't wait till he is a little older so he can start to learn more about hunting and fishing.

:D As far as compounds for wee youth the Atomic is outstanding...worked on one this weekend and wanted to shoot it...lol

Another outstanding compound bow would be the Genesis MINI...a solocam option so a little smoother and easier drawing even for the youngest...also since there is ZERO draw lentgh ...they can shoot the bow without adjusting draw from 14" to 25"

Weight may be a factor...the atomic is at 2.5 lbs whereas the Mini is 2 Lbs however the Atomic is shorter at a very managable 24" the Mini is 29" but feels light and short for the youngsters...

These are quaility bows and will last as long as draw length...some box store bows may be a lot less expensive but made of plastic...and not very adjustable

It is supper light and as he grows, his draw length will increase as will the draw weight.

I bought my son a Samick shadow for his 5th birthday he's almost 7 and still shooting it. Think I paid 134 at trophy book

It sure would be nice to be able to find a left handed bow for the little guys. My boy is left eye dominant but it is nearly impossible to find a left handed bow he can handle. Diamonds nuclear ice used to come in left hand but it is hard to find a used left one that doesn't get snatched up right away. I have him shooting a right handed diamond atomic, he just has had to learn to close his left eye when shooting which isn't optimal. I am hoping he can switch over to left handed shooting once he can handle a little bigger bow.
