Need Stock Duplicated, Where Do I Go?
 

So my beloved Husqy 30-06 I recieved from my grandfather has problems!
It has a small crack behind the tang. This evening when i pulled the stock off to relieve that pressure point i seen that the recoil lug area has two major cracks and the wood thats in the sides of the magazine well is cracked and splintered.
I do believe its beyond repair and likely to get worse rapidly (it went from just the slight tang cracks to this in 2-4 boxes). It seems to me that the best option is to get a duplicate built for it. (If there is other options pls enlighten me!). The sentamental value of this rifle is very high, also, i dont just want to retire it.
I dont really know where to start with this though, i want the work to be done by a trusty person that can ensure a quality result. Im not looking to get very fancy wood but elegant and very strong/durable is important. Also I’d like to keep the original shape/form as its very slim and enjoyable to use. I would prefer it to be checkered to the pattern of the originalz
And finnaly whag kind of price is this work likely to have? 600$? 800$? 1200$? Or more?

I checked tradex, theirs are just the straight comb, mine has a raised cheekpeice. Also, id rather have one made from new high quality wood rather than another stock of the sort with a reputation for cracking!

x2 .. A real nice laminate, with all the trimmings, from Boyds for around $300.00 CDN would be pretty hard to beat.
I have used the guys at New Norway as well with no issues but there is a fair amount of work to do from that point.

My bet is that the existing stock could be Devcon Bedded and repaired to the pint it iwll never crack again. I have fixed a lot of cracked Mauser stiocks and it is actually pretty eay to do. Done right you won't be able to tell it was ever cracked.

Otherwise, Bill in New Norway would be my choice to. There is a LOT of hand work and finishing required to complete a stock that is just duplicated, but it will have the exact pattern of the existing stock.

Boyds Mauser stocks tend to be very full and quite heavy. Also, Boyds sells an unfinished walnut stock that can be trimmed down as much as you like, only problem is it needs to be checkered when done.

Here are some before and after piks of a Mauser stock I slimmed down, it took about a pound and a half off the guns weight.

If a repair would be possible it would be my first choice.
Boyds are out as they dont make a design even close to as nice as this husqy, besides that it would alter it too much for my taste.

Gunsmith Gary Flach in Langley,BC can repair or or make you a new wood stock from Scratch depending on what you need, he has fixed several husky stocks for me without issue.

I second this idea. He’s built a couple for me too.

I’ve also Devcon bedded a stock a few months ago that had a crack from the centre of the rear tang. Which was caused by the action screws being loose and/or the use of a leadsled. I bought it that way. Haven’t shot it much since then so I can’t really say how it will hold up.
