This man launched himself in his homemade rocket

A special kind of crazy or seeking glory?

Seeking to*prove*that a conspiracy of astronauts*fabricated the*shape*of the*Earth,*a California man intends to*launch*himself 1,800 feet high*on Saturday in a rocket he built from scrap metal.
Assuming the 500-mph, mile-long*flight through the Mojave Desert does not kill*him, Mike Hughes*told the Associated Press,*his*journey into the*atmosflat will*mark the first phase of*his ambitious flat-Earth space program.
Hughes’s ultimate goal is*a subsequent*launch that puts*him miles above the Earth,*where*the 61-year-old limousine driver hopes to*photograph proof of*the*disc we all live on.

Godspeed young man Darwin needs more astronauts, what could go wrong?

Ha ha, Evel Knievel's long lost relative? He better get a pay Per View going, it will pay for his funeral.

Okotokian 11-22-2017 08:52 AM

here's the key phrase that explains everything:

"Hughes only recently converted to flat-Eartherism, after struggling for months to raise funds for his follow-up flight over the Mojave."

'nuff said.

CaberTosser 11-22-2017 08:55 AM

Wouldn’t it be cheaper to take photos out the window of pretty much any commercial flight? Heck, he’d even be able to take more photos because he wouldn’t have to be frantically pulling on the parking brake like Wile E Coyote while trying to delay his impending death......

I’m sure that rocket will only need the briefest of pre-launch safety checks after being parked unsecured overnight at the Holiday Inn Express. (I’m picturing an engineering student frat party stumbling by the unattended rocket in the wee hours of the morning .....)

Probably just bought Billion in life insurance. Wonder if we can bet on this experiment in Vegas?:sHa_shakeshout:

i wish i would have known sooner i would have thrown $20 in the pot to watch him die

silverdoctor 11-22-2017 09:46 AM

Sounds like he switched sides to get funding for his rocketry.

Quote:

It was originally scheduled for early 2016 in a Kickstarter campaign — “From Garage to Outer Space!”

The Kickstarter raised $310 of its $150,000 goal.

Now he's got the funding through "Research Flat Earth".

Very clever

I sort of collect scams, there haven't been too many lately but this qualifies. The first AO member who guesses how this guy will make $ on this deal will get to take a bow.

For the younger members Evil Knievel said he was going to jump the snake river canyon on a motor cycle and I think that he was able to sell tickets.

What the buyers saw was Evil float to the bottom on the canyon on a parachute.

I've always wanted to journey, way up there to the Atmosflat !

Thanks for the chuckle, Bat119 :happy0034:

Oooh! Quick, start up a GoFundMe for that one - I'm sure you'll have enough contributions in no time flat!

Good luck rocket man Mike...you’re going to need it.

This kind of reminds me of when I was young and a buddy and I decided to make home-made parachutes out of duck taped garbage bags and rope. I was lucky buddy went first. We climbed onto the roof of his parents two-story house and strapped ourselves in. I still remember him jumping off and plummeting straight to the ground. For some reason the parachute never opened. Then the screaming and crying started. I learned at least two things that day; it’s always good to have one friend who is braver/stupider than you to try stuff out on and ankles and arms hurt real bad when broken.

Sounds Familiar

Is this the same group who had Galileo placed under house arrest for the same claims?

58thecat 11-22-2017 04:56 PM

What a beauty eh! Genetics gonna stop right after the launch.

Newview01 11-22-2017 05:03 PM

My drone can go up to 5000 ft.

Just sayin.

I think you meant to say “right at the crash site”!

Excuse me if I’m wrong.

The moon doesn't spin therefore you can't proce its a ball...however I can prove looking up that it is a round flat plate. Just like the Earth is seen by the man on the moon.

Huh? The moon does rotate, takes 27 days to make a single rotation. Just appears to be still.

colroggal 11-22-2017 05:30 PM

'You can't fool me - It's elephants all the way down!'

colroggal 11-22-2017 05:31 PM

If the earth was flat we would have run out of water a long time ago. Riddle me that, Batman.

Colin

colroggal 11-22-2017 05:33 PM

Or, if the earth was flat day and night would be the same length of time at all latitudes.

Colin

colroggal 11-22-2017 05:35 PM

Anyone else got a silly counter argument for the flat earthers?

The moon spins once every cycle, hence we only see one side of it

He should take his nano lube and put the rocket away :sHa_sarcasticlol:

I read this story on my phone at work today. My co-workers thought I had gone slightly mad the way I was giggling to myself.
What could go wrong? A rocket made out of scrap metal, painted Rustoleum (Tremclad for us Canadians) red and launched from a "modified" motorhome.
Powered by steam...

At least hye's thoughtful enough to leave a few days worth of cat food for his four cats. Gotta give him credit for that...

I'm still giggly thinking about it...
