2020 Mountain Caribou Trip

Hey guys.

Well we made it back safe and sounds from our great trip to Northern BC.

Started out by fishing for some outstanding brook trout in a local lake right in the town of Dease lake of your ever in the area it’s worth a quick fish.

We flew out of Dease lake with an outstanding pilot from BCyukon air. Arrived at our lake and switched out with another group of lucky hunters that had harvested 2 nice bulls.

Once we got unloaded we started making camping quickly we found out that this ground was gonna be challenging let alone finding a piece of ground level enough to sleep on. We set up my new Liteoutdoors tipi tent and stove and started making some tarp shelters as the forecast was calling for 7 days of rain.

We set out in our hunts with the use of a sweet 3 person inflatable boat that was a life saver. I found this great Caribou Hunt she’s along our journey.

Literally 5 min after locating these sheds, Raj our BC host turns and looks at us and says Big Caribou Bull I strip my rifle off my pack quickly and take down this gorgeous once in a life time bull.

We quickly start caping and deboning the meat all in the pouring rain the 3 of us packed the bull pack to our boat only 1 mile away.

Was an absolute great trip unfortunately I was the only one to harvest as this was the only legal bull we spotted on our trip.

Until next time.

Thanks here’s a little slide show I put together.

Great vid of your trip Andrew. How far were you from where we hunted last year.
How did you like your tipi tent. That wood there plugged off the chimney vent pipe screen and had to be cleaned every day.
Aren't those little helinox chairs a great comfort to sit with a backrest.
Congrats on your Bull. Did the other fellas kill anything..
Cheers.

Hey Springer

We were around 25Km North of where you hunted last year. I really liked my Tipi tent however the guide line on one corner did tare off in a storm. Talked to Brennen and he is going to ship me a new tent. We flew in some firewood for our tent but still had to clean the stove every 3rd day especially if we burnt the local fire wood. Didn't take any more than 5 min. I was the only one to harvest a bull on this trip we only seen the one legal Caribou. Defiantly like the Helinox chairs after a hard day hiking.

Andrew did you see the Stone Ram our BC hosts got this year...different area more NE they saw bucketloads of Caribou in this new spot.....Guess where were going next August....
Smart idea on the wood. I cut a plastic Milk crate full of 14" pieces to bring along. It helped with starting fires for sure.

astepanuk 09-12-2020 11:30 AM

I dream Ram for sure.

If anybody is planning on going the host route for Caribou I’d definitely get on it right away. In 2-3 years I’m guessing it won’t be happening anymore. With numbers declining everywhere they will surely follow goats soon, and the hosting option will be gone !

astepanuk 09-12-2020 10:05 PM

That’s exactly what I told my wife to get the Nod to go for 10 days. It’s either now or through an outfitter which I have nothing against just wanted to do this on our own.

AB2506 09-12-2020 10:21 PM

Congrats!
