speeding in BC

Just a heads up. Got busted in the passing lane going past a couple of trucks while RCMP was doing radar from a little hiding spot. Needless to say it cost me a couple of bucks. I'm not complaining because I got caught this time. Here's the kicker...new law in BC says if doing more than 40 kph over limit its an on the spot 7 day impound and a $398 ticket. It's not hard to do especially when passing.

sheephunter 03-10-2011 11:51 AM

Ya, last interview I heard, they'd impounded over 80 Alberta cars already. Make getting home a little tough....lol

TUFFBUFF 03-10-2011 12:07 PM

I was up in FSJ yesterday and ended up talking about this, He says anything over 20k fines can be up to 900 bucks and a reckless driving charge!!!! You also get put into some new system they have. OUCH!

thanks for the heads up !!!!!

Bc.................bring cash !!!

Lefty-Canuck 03-10-2011 12:14 PM

I also heard they implemented a "street racing" law. Due to several street racing deaths in the past couple years. So if you get caught doing 50kms over.....your car is confiscated and sold to auction.....not sure if its true or not?

And people ask me why i never go to BC, gee i dunno, you can't double tow,HST, carbon tax on fuel.....................:thinking-006:

DarkAisling 03-10-2011 12:17 PM

Had a friend who was busted doing 180 on the Coq a few years ago. Not only did they impound his car, they placed him (complete with armed "escort") in an ambulance and hauled him off to Kamloops for a psyche eval.

KodiakHntr 03-10-2011 12:25 PM

Got tagged out by my house this summer on the way to work....."39"km over, after failing to come to a complete stop at a stop sign (over a railway track in the middle of a hayfield........)

After it was all said and done, it could of been over $3k.

Got lucky, and chatted him down to $350.

Managed to get it under the 40km over, as ICBC will tag you each year for 3 or 5 years (forget which it is) for $1000 on your birthday as a "dangerous driver" at the 40km over mark. ON TOP of the doubling of your insurance fees to boot.....Which, on my 8 year old Dodge are over $1200 a year as it is, with a perfect driving record.

fordtruckin 03-10-2011 12:39 PM

Well maybe now people will slow down. You shouldn't need to go 150 to pass someone going 110. Unfortunately everyone in Alberta is always in such a rush. one of the main reasons I left. Way to busy for me. Definately sucks if you get busted!

ducky_hunter 03-10-2011 12:45 PM

Go east spend you money in sask or manitoba

pseelk 03-10-2011 12:54 PM

Simple solution, You want to keep your money-Dont speed!Might even save your own life-Just sayin.

elkhunter11 03-10-2011 01:21 PM

Since the Canadian dollar is so strong, I will just spend more vacation time in the USA.

Law of unintended consequences will start rearing its head here.......people will see that after a point its better to not stop and take the risk of trying to get away versus what....almost the same punishment....might as well make a run for it.

40kmph.....thats kilometers not miles but the impression has become that this is sooooo fast.......its pretty easy to do inorder to passing a B train and one tail dragger behind him on a busy highway.....its 25mph ....so hitting 85 passing in the above is suddenly a cash cow....

Forget about busting the grow ops as they are the #2 economic generator for BC with an estimated 5billion per year in economic activity....only second to logging industry....better to tackle the working poor (after they pay the PST, GST, Fed&Prov Income Tax, Sin taxes, Fuel Taxes, Property Taxes, and User Fee driven Tax)........seems like the govt has become an addict itself......and can't stop the addiction becoming all consuming.....pathetic.

Screw the plates and insurance....mad max here we come.

Fisherpeak 03-10-2011 02:39 PM

Try drinking here, even though it`s still.08 they bust you for .05,impound your rig, fine you.How can the "legal limit" be .08 and yet you get screwed on .05?

alodar 03-10-2011 02:48 PM

Even better try driving around not speeding or drinking and having a clean plate and stopping for a Jay walker and STILL getting pulled over .......for a dirty plate........... and not even getting a ticket but being detained for 2 hours in the back of a car while they search my car illegaly still didn't find anything and then they let me go. It was awesome power abuse I even thanked the officer for a job well done when he was leaving I even said have a good day

75-85 mph is the norm on the interstates and freeways in the U.S. I drive that fast all the time when I'm down there, no reason we couldn't have higher speed limits up here.

He could have made you get on the ground, and then kicked you in the face.

There is a lot of places here that you would have to be insane to drive that fast.We have corners and REAL big dropoffs.

There are a couple spots in B.C. that have straight roads. But I do agree that you'd have to be insane to drive that fast everywhere in B.C.

Easy they don't even need a reason to stop you. Just a routine 'Show me your papers, comrade'

agreed! ive seen it from both sides. when i lived there and was "one of them" i saw how poorly they treat tourists. they view visitors as a source of revenue for the government. its sad, but how ity is. try going there to work in compnay vehicles. getting stopped and interrogated is a regular thing.

Most of the highways in Netherlands, Belguim and Germany and somewhat in France have 130kmph as the speed limit. The 100kmph speed limits were for single lane narrow windy highways through the countryside.

And on the autobaun its even better......boy did I love driving there......nothing beats cruising at 185kmph.....thats when "getting to your destination is half the fun" makes sense.....always seemed like the 100km drives were over before they started.

WOW!
- my driver license expired 9 months ago and I don't have a local one.
- I have no insurance on my car
- I buy my inspection sticker at the gas station
- I always drive fast, I have no idea about speed limits - I don't think there is any...
- I break every possible traffic rules, probably I break more in a week than someone does in a lifetime
- I don't stop for most of the cops
- I ride my ATV to work, to shop or anywhere I want to in the middle of the city
- Last time I got a police escort to find another bar which was still open after 3am, of course I had to buy a round for the 2 cops. They where on duty.
- If I catch up with a slow police cruiser I just keep honking until they let me go..

And I'll give all this up so I can move to AB and HUNT AGAIN! :sHa_shakeshout:

Forgot to take your smart pills I see.

Keep in mind most roads in bc are 2 lane not 4.

So just so you do not strain yourself, how much distance will you need to pass someone going 110kph if you try to pass them at 120 kph?

Did you know you are in the ONCOMING LANE then for almost 1 full minute, and have travelled a distance of over .3 kilometers?

Give your head a shake.

When on a 2 lane road and passing someone get out, pass and get back in safely.

There are VERY FEW passing lanes in BC that are over 1 kilometer long!

Sit down and do the math.

110 km/h= 30 meters per second If the passing vehivle is moving at 120km/h he is travelling 33 meters per second.
Assuming you pass with safe distance from behind the vehicle AND leaving proper distance when merging back into your travelling lane, you are only passing that vehicle at 3 meters per second! So with safe distance added in and a vehicle length of 10 meters, that 3 meters per second HAS TO traverse 330 meters of road to do so in a safe distance!

Jeez, some people ought to engage the brain before typing. The law is total BS and aimed primarily at the street racers in Vancouver who are doing it in the public eye and on very public roads.
And it punishes all of us in the process.

Thats fine.....for you.
How bout the 16 year old girl driving and texting at 185k.
Kinda scary :scared0015:
As a firefighter I've pulled out enough mangled bodies to say that SPEED KILLS.
Good on BC for sending the message.
Maybe this toughness will save you / me or one of our family members one day
