Temps
Enjoy the fishing in southern Alberta now, the rivers will be bathwater in no time if the forecasts are accurate. No rain and mid 30's for a couple weeks.

Hoping to get out this week but who knows how the fishing will be. |
Fishing is good

We all remember a couple years ago when they closed all the streams due to prolonged high temps. But barring that, what conditions would have to be in place for you to voluntarily stop fishing in order to not put undue stress on fish? I assume that at some point, it would be more prudent to switch from lakes and streams to lake fishing. Am I misguided?

Unfortunately not everyone has a ethical view of when to stop fishing. I am talking about the sport fishing, not fishing to support your life if that is required.
Much of that is educational awareness about water temps when we do see these conditions forecasted everyone should make it as aware as possible that catching, handling and releasing fish during these conditions add stress to the streams population. It would be nice to think we can all make a "safe" determination as to when to move to a different and more suitable body of water but we know that isn't the case. I am not opposed to mandated closures when the water temps come up if it helps preserve our waters. I hope to be able to enjoy another 3+ weeks of my favourite streams but if the temps stay the way they are I will be searching for cooler waters [emoji39] Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk |
Temps were good in the high country today, but the heatwave is just starting.

Don; Good article. Was down at Police 2 wks ago & water temps were 69 deg then, time to leave the fish alone. https://www.theweathernetwork.com/ca...berta/cardston..
Stopped by Dipping Vat just to see.The water was covered with blue green algae. The very toxic stuff, farmers moving livestock away from the lake,so they won't drink the water...With these temps & NO WIND ...Summerkill is a very likely thing....Hope not.... |
Sounds like I need to buy myself a thermometer.

When the streams get low, I head high. Great time to fish alpine lakes

Was fishing brookies in a somewhat silt bottomed foothills stream last night, measured 66F at 7:30. I think if the forecast is correct we're going to see dangerous conditions at lower elevations.

Temps in the Crow yesterday evening were in the 65F/18C range.
