Spin Rod Fly Fishing

I used this method for sea run browns, in tida ponds, but found it very effective most everywhere. The distance of the cast, the advantage.
The cork weighted bobber worked best, but the water weighted, very good.
Two snelled flys on loops, 4or 5 ft from the bobber.
Of course any fly patter can be used, but i found this simple fly the best--size 18 hook---silver body--black hackel.
Reel very slow just to keep tension, on the cast. Quartering with the wind if possible, seems to work best.

I sometimes use this with great success. I find it easier to use if your heading to a small stream with tight cover. The best advantage of this is the casting effectiveness, You could throw your flies farther than any fly rod could if your setup is perfect. This is an easy alternative for those who don't want to take on learning to fly fish.

Fishing with fly's would not be okay on a fly fishing forum why?

MrDave 03-20-2018 10:22 PM

Its a great way to catch fish. Beats the heck out of all the effort of fly fishing. Often better at getting into spots where the wind is giving trouble.

I'd heard that people did this, but never thought anyone would publicly admit it.:fishing:

It's a great system for a flyfisher who has had shoulder surgery or an injury preventing him or her from casting and wants to fish with flies he or she has tied. Or maybe he or she cant cast a fly rod but still wants to enjoy fishing with flies. Who are you to play judge and jury??? at least he is fishing and enjoying the sport! get the $%#&^ off your high horse and stop being so damn self righteous! People like you spoil the sport of fishing!

Jayhad 03-21-2018 02:51 AM

This should be in the Fishing section as this is not fly fishing. To be fly fishing one must utilise the weight of the fly line to carry the flies, not a weight. That is bait casting with flies.

That said i don't care how you fish if it is legal but don't call it fly fishing

I totally agree.

I hope the other fellow can understand this logic and be a trooper and move his comments out of the fly fishing forum and into the fishing forum.

Mr Flyguy 03-21-2018 09:09 AM

As much as I agree with the purist definition of fly fishing, I see a dark side which many of us have entered. What about the use of bobbers, oops, I mean indicators? :rolleye2:

McLeod 03-21-2018 09:58 AM

Fly fishing only: means only artificial flies may be used.

Each to their own...

Pikebreath 03-21-2018 10:49 AM

A few fly fishing type posts end up on the Fishing Board,,, nobody seems to care about that!!!!

coyoteman 03-21-2018 11:33 AM

Fly fishing

oops, could have put it on the fishing section, but because of the flys ?? I have hooked and released over 60 atlantic salmon in a season, so a "fly" fisherman.
The fly bobber also good for children, or people who cannot use a fly rod, but want to catch trout----widely used in the Atlantic prov. on the tidal ponds, a world record brown was caught by this method on a tidal pond southern avalon, the fly rod seldom used because of its limited range.

coyoteman 03-21-2018 12:09 PM

spin reel fly fishing

How about spin reel with fly rod???? see my post fly fishing.

x2 to these Philadelphia Dandy's & High Talkers

and if you dippers use cork indicators u r now centre pinning flys

if you use weighted eyes on your fly et cetera u r now jigging

if you have ever looked at a san juan worm, an egg pattern, or a streamer you are bait fishermen now ... Shame On U All

i personally have found great success with flies tipped with worms or maggots .... sewn minnows also work great with an attracter fly above them

Neither does giving oneself an online moniker that has the word "fly" (or "Flie") in it. There are many ways of fishing with a fly that aren't the enforcement definition of "fly fishing only" and saying that, I have never seen a definition in the regs that defined the method of delivery being restricted to a type of rod and/or reel.

I have fly fished for over 40 years but I don't see the need to be a prig about who can or cannot call themselves a "fly fisher". Not meant to offend, but many here could lighten up.

32-40win 03-21-2018 01:59 PM

What's the difference from a jointed fly like a Sex Dungeon to a jointed Rapala other than the type of hooks used on them, and the material, they are designed to work the same way in the water. People tie floating, suspending and sinking flies that imitate baitfish, add things to them to make them swim like an injured one, add things like fish skulls to them. Just another way to catch fish. I asked a flyshop owner what he thought about a kid learning to fish with a worm on a hook, as many of us did, his response made him sound very elitest, and certainly did nothing to earn any respect. But, it isn't just flyfishers that do that sort of thing, it is a common human trait.

Yes, of course, a small inadvertence, new on the forum.
You might review -stob- thread, and enlighting us of your point of view to his comments as a purist. Of course a learning experience for me new to the forum and all. cheers

Sacrilege :argue2:

Flieguy 03-21-2018 03:22 PM

For me, it's not about what the fly is ( though I wouldn't call trout beads or wire worms flies), it's about the delivery.

In fly fishing, the weight of the line is casted to deliver the fly and leader, not the weight of a bobber or a weight

Those that can... do.
Those that cannot... resort to using spinning gear.
Done.

bryanfewchuk 03-21-2018 06:34 PM

Agreed that's spin casting with a fly. Not fly fishing with a spin rod

Fly fishing is about the art of fly fishing. Spin fishing with a weighted with water bobber or weights added to the line to allow it to cast with a couple flies under it is still spin fishing.
