Weirdest fish/creature/thing you have caught while fly fishing

What's the weirdest thing you've hooked while fly fishing? Myself would probably be a muskrat, bats and, crayfish, all the fish in Manitoba were pretty weird.

nekred 01-03-2017 11:49 AM

A bat on my back cast.....

A muskrat (tangled and released)

A duck... released.....

A beaver... released himself but took my fly!....

Backyardhunter3006 01-03-2017 04:42 PM

I've caught a duck, a dragonfly and the craziest of all was a bald eagle. (Which of course snapped my line)

FlyTheory 01-03-2017 07:50 PM

Bat as well! It was dusk and I was casting a mayfly. What else apart from condoms and sticks...

I wasn't fly-fishing, but I was fishing the Bow and snagged this from an eddy while reeling my line in... It was dead already.

It was south of the BonnyBrook waste treatment plant, so I'm guessing someone flushed him down the toilet.

Was fishing Harold Creek west of Water Valley for brown trout. I was using a flying black ant on the surface when my partner got his leg stuck in something and was comically trying to free himself.

I stopped paying attention to my ant which sank to the bottom, in order to watch my partner. When I went to cast again, the biggest sucker in all the Alberta Foothills had taken it. I thought I was hooked into a huge brown, when much to my surprise I landed a 5lb, ugly bottom feeding monster.

I have hooked many suckers before while nymphing, but that thing was right out of left field.

I have also caught several squawfish, which I believe are now called a, "Pike Minnow." They fight well but are ugly and very slimy.

You mean 1 foot sturgeon on a 12+ foot rod.

Otherwise I cry pants on fire.

I had a bite while back fishing the mouth sturgeon meet NSR.

Had a fish on but fought weird.

Eventually brought in a nice Goldeye. Attached to a hook. Attached to a rod and reel.

Looked upstream at a couple guys shocked and saddened. Brought them the rod and they just stared in disbelief. It was theirs. Goldeye bit so hard to the rod out of the holder before they could move.

I was bombing a casting bubble and a wolly bugger across a stocked pond with my spin rod in BC and i had a great blue heron swoop down and grab the bubble off of the surface and take flight!

I loosened my drag off and let him go not wanting to hurt such an awesome bird, he took all my line up over the trees on the other side of the water and just as i ran out of line i lowered my rod parallel with ground and held on tight...when it tightened it was hard to hold...i actually was able to reel the line back in after he let it go in the trees saved the line and bubble but the bugger sadly was no more...

I caught a fresh water mussel or clam on a clouser minnow on kootney lake.

One evening South of Calgary while dry fly fishing I had two cans of beer float by still in the plastic rings. They were a quick dip net bonus for the evening. They probably got away from a rafter further up in the city. Better than any lizard, bat, bird etc....you folks seem to be catching, lol.

Some places in BC are easy to fish loons in. Boxers really peel off line, labs too.
How about a 6" dia rock with seaweed on it and a 3/4" dia crab from around 80ft down? a small "spoon" with a wood handle and a triangular metal pc.
A tern.

Not fly fishing but I was fishing the Kitimat for springs a few yrs back. I hooked into a decent fish probly 25-30 lbs. I was playing him for a few mins when all of a sudden he took off upstream like crazy fast, headed right for a log jam. But mere feet away from the jam he stopped like he had brakes. Then peeled out line towards the middle of the river and just like before, he stopped instantly just feet before hitting a log. Then he turned and came back. It was all I could do to pick up my line. Then when he got infront of me a seal popped up with my fish in his mouth. I managed to get the fish from the seal and beach it but before I could get to it, it flopped back in the river, and got snagged right away on a stump I already lost 20-30 dollars worth of gear on.

Odd I remember this photo on Fly fish Calgary, could've sworn the story was a 6wt single hand and a 6'er.

A fishing with a Mitchell open face reel and a red white Len Thompson still on it. I put up a found at the store no one ever did claim it.
