I immediately thought salmon when i saw it but Im no entomologist! |
Salmonflies (Pteronarcys californica) are a Stonefly. They are a large member, if not the largest, of the Stonefly family in North America.
Have heard the hatch has started in the Crowsnest, and likely a number of other flowing waters as well. Trying to hit the hatch is a tricky thing...comes and goes quickly and sometimes seems site specific. You can fish a section of river with none hatching and yet a mile upstream they are everywhere. But, if they have hatched in a section the fish tend to 'remember' they were there and feed on large dries for a while even after it is done. A friend of mine was heading south to try to catch the hatch this weekend. Haven't heard if he found it, but it is the right time of year for them to be active. |
lots out there.

I was down at the Bow In Bowness today.
The Hatch that I observed were Skwala Stoneflies.. They are the first to emerge. They will be followed shortly by Golden Stoneflies. I am drifting tomorrow and will report |
