My first arrowhead

Thought I would share this with the archery forum too. I just started learning the art of flintknapping.

My first point. One inch long bird point. Might consider commissions once I get better.

What material is that? Looks like ceramic. If you really want to make good points find some natural flint or chert. Of all the original stone arrow heads I've found in southern Alberta all were either flint or chert.

Very cool. I have been watching YouTube videos planning to try it myself.

I believe it's called "Novaculite" from Arkansas. I also have some dacite, chert and flint to try. The trick is heat treating the rock. Each kind of rock requires a different heat treatment.

The stone arrowheads you find in Alberta may have migrated here with people. Years ago my dad found an immaculately worked flint knife picking rocks in a field. A museum archaeologist informed us that particular type of stone came from down in Wyoming and was estimated to be made about 3 to 5000 years ago. He also found another point in that same field the same day that was estimated to be 6 to 8000 years old. And it was local stone.

Nice work

That's gotta be satisfying. Nothing like making something with your own two hands.

Just an update...Some pics of more attempts at making a few points.

I just wish I could make an obsidian ulu knife like the one in the last picture.

Stinky Buffalo 03-18-2016 01:48 PM

Those look great! Nice work.

That ulu is something else - someday, Red Bullets, someday... :)

Bringing this back to the top. Nice work Eugene. I wanted to publicly thank you for the rock and tools you sent to me. I hope I can accomplish something that resembles a point

Thanks again!

You are most welcome. I hope the materials give you as much fun as they give me. I am still working towards being able to flake an ulu. Hopefully the rock gods will allow me to reveal the ulu waiting in a rock.

huntsfurfish 07-21-2020 02:42 PM

Some great heads there RB!

Looks like you get the point.:);)
