What bullet in 240 wby for 300 yard deer

I have my thoughts on what bullet to use in a 240 wby for deer at 300 yards . The deer will not be any closer, but may extend to 400 yards . So what are some of the thoughts out there. I can push a 100 gr bullet close to 3400fps and 80 gr at 3600fps .

Accubond

What bullet

100 grain accubond

You could likely do a lot worse than a 95gr Ballistic Tip

waldedw 12-10-2019 08:43 PM

100 gr ELDX or Accubond

80gr. will shed velocity/ energy to quickly for a 300 plus shot, 100 grs would be better.....105gr. better still.

something wrong

With a 100gr Partition also available in 85 +95gr

Weatherby

Although I have no first hand experience with the .240 and hand-loads(yet), I’ve favoured Speer Grand Slams in both my 257 and 300 Weatherby’s. I have a box of 100gr to try soon.

85gr TSX, devastating on deer out to 400yds.

The 90gr. Accubond is probably a good starting point.

85gr sierra HPBT. Deer killer!

trailraat 12-11-2019 09:04 AM

The 100g Sierra SPBT that someone loaded for me this year worked well on a deer at 260yds out of my 6mm Remington.

jeprli 12-11-2019 06:03 PM

Ballistic tip 95g.

ram crazy 12-11-2019 06:08 PM

95gr Ballistic Tip

Mine only likes 90gr bullets, ballistic tips and Accubonds to same point of impact...one for practice and one for hunting based on cost :)

Son shot a big muley at 415 yards with his 240. 90 grain accubond was perfectly mushroomed under the hide. We’ll keep using them.

Not to derail, but what velocities are you guys seeing with 90 & 95 grain bullets?

Cheyenne 1 12-12-2019 07:43 PM

Shoot the heaviest bullet the twist of your rifle will allow.
With a case like that I would want to shoot a 115 Berger hunting or something similar.
Shoot a high BC hunting bullet.

Got some old Speer 105 gr and some nosler 100 gr solid base squirrelled away and will try them in this 240 to see how they shoot. It’s a Ruger 77 Hawkeye action and stock with a Shilen barrel. This one is for my son , and is not quite completed yet .

Sounds like a fun project.
I have started collecting the older wby mark v German built guns. I don’t have a 240 yet

fps plus 12-12-2019 08:24 PM

I think I have built myself 6 240 wby mags and and after developing loads buddies keep buying them . I currently have one that loves the Speer 105 gr I have yet to shoot a deer with one . My boys and I have found a spot where deer cross thru and it’s a 300 yard shot. I’m not 100 % sold on monolithic bullets at 300- 400 yard range . I’ve been wondering what others have used at this range in their 240s

brewster29 12-13-2019 12:44 AM

I don't have a 240 Wby, I have shot a lot of deer, two black bears and a couple bull elk with 100 gr Nosler Partitions in my 6mm Rem 9" twist. Had poor results getting penetration with Sierra and Speer cup and core bullets previously. At 300 yards you won't be giving up a lot to higher BC bullets. Accubonds would also be a great choice.

Many of the German made guns have rifling twists only compatible with lighter bullets .Speed sold in the day.
