Seeing lots of decent 6-7 footers and tons of smaller bears. Waiting on a color phase though no interest in black bear color for rug

Just for some of the rookies on here that are not sure how to square a bear you measure nose-to-tail Paw to paw add and divide by 2 gives you a square footage now let's see some 7-foot bears

Far from a rookie when it comes to baiting, and unfortunately this is the only pic I could find of this guy as i dont save trail cam pics but emailed this one a couple years ago, but he would be pushing close to 7ft. Hes on cam every year since 2015, but never once in daylight. Tried bacon burns, honey burns, everything you can think of and I have yet to ever lay eyes on him or even get a daytime pic.

This guy named “Him” will have to wait another year as I’m away this year.
6’ and 450 lb we figure.

Ya I love it when guys say how long their bear is. Stretch the hide as far as it goes and some only measure head to toe lol

Try moving the bait a couple hundred yards, mess with his head!

Yeah, I've always only considered nose to tail as the size.

Nose to tail on the carcass. And when I’ve measured mine they’re laying on the ground, not hung so they stretch a little a more.
IMO a shooter starts around the 6.5’ mark and a 7’+ color phase is my moby dick. I had a big color phase come through in 2010 then again in 2016 but he’s a ghost. Stands taller then the barrel, smart and his ears froze off a few years ago. He’s the old warrior that keeps me excited for spring bear.

It will be longer that way than it should be. You need length plus width without stretching it and divide by 2.
Ive never measured a carcass but it would be interesting to see how close it should be. I don't think it would be as accurate myself.

Done that, truly there isn’t a thing I have heard of or that’s worked for me over the years on other stubborn bears that I haven’t tried. He’s a ghost of the night lol. One day I’m hoping he’ll be lovesick and make a mistake with a sow!

35 whelen 05-11-2018 06:29 AM

Maybe you've tried it I would start bringing your bait in and out with you

I'm not seeing quite as much action as same time last year...but have at least 11 different bears coming in...including 3 different sows with 2-year old cubs. I'm hoping the presence of these mature sows brings in a big boy during the rut!
This is one of the sows...pretty colour along with her cub. She had two coloured cubs last year but it looks like she lost one at some point...
Attachment 145823

This guy has also been showing up...but haven't yet managed to get a decent pic of him to determine if he's one of the better boars I had there last year...or a new player.
He seems to have decent "heft" to him.
Attachment 145824
Not sure if it's because of his position in relation to the barrel but he looks pretty decent in this pic too.
Attachment 145825

Attachment 145826

Hopefully I'll get some better pics of him over the next few days.

First bear

Well I got my first bear ever this weekend. Walking an old logging road in northwest BC. Stalked to 40 yards and dropped with a 180 grain handloads from my 308. Didn’t go 10 yards and expired. Not a big bear but meat is at the butcher getting made up into a variety of sausage and pepperoni!

Son, 44 magnum at 15ish yards, didnt go 15 yards. About 5' and a halfish with a decent sized head

7mmremmag 05-14-2018 07:40 PM

Congrats on the beauty bears guys.
Wish I was out doing some spot & stalk or sitting a bait right now, rather than sitting on this damn rig all day!

Dean2 05-15-2018 07:59 AM

Good Job to both of you. Bigger Pics for easier seeing.
