300 wm reloading.... starting point

Have just purchased my second set of dies. This time 300wm from user Ranets.

Will start reading the nosler reloading manual to find some good starting points but wanted to glean some experience with powders from you all....

What have you had success with?

4831, imr 7828, h1000. 4831 for 180 grain bullets and below. The others for up to 230 grain.

Reloader 19 with 168gr Barnes TSX

brewster29 02-14-2019 06:21 PM

Not sure what rifle you have but my Remington shoots its best with RL22 pushing Barnes 180 TSX or TTSX.

JD848 02-14-2019 07:13 PM

rl 22 with 180 accubonds around 2950 to 3000 fps, start low and work your way up.You can push them faster, but that's seem to b the sweet spot for me.

fps plus 02-14-2019 07:15 PM

4350 with 165 gr

dogslayer403 02-14-2019 08:03 PM

Rl-22 for Hornady 212g eld-x and both berger 175g and 190g

marky_mark 02-14-2019 08:19 PM

If you don’t have a chrony it would be a good idea to get one
As nice as it is to see good groups at 100 yards consistent FPS is just as important
I’d use a know, temp stable powder which will give consistent results when you need it

RL 22 in the 30-06 is really temperature sensitive not sure about in the .300 but something to keep in mind.

I use 4831 in pretty much every hunting caliber I load because I can use 4831 in pretty much every hunting caliber I load. :)

I wish there were sample bottles powder. Like 1/4 lb would be nice. Looks from the manual that I can start with h1000 the IMRs look good too. Thanks for the advice all.

I use H4350 in my 300 win and 300. H&H.
4350 and 4831 either IMR or Hodgdon are very versatile powders,
The likes of reloader, 23,25, 26, retumbo etc, will perhap yield, a little more speed.

6.5 shooter 02-15-2019 03:12 PM

Just looking at your reloading manual (Nosler) RL 22 is 75 gr. of powder= more recoil as well. Can you tell I am not a big fan? IMR powders tend to give me the best results in most calibers.

One powder I never tried is the hybrid 100 v ,i have a couple pounds ,but I guess I will have to try it in the future. I used viht powders for cold temps with good luck,165,160,560 ,565 I have ,but not used it yet.

The 300 win has a large powder group for reloading and sometimes you just got to try new stuff. That's the best part of reloading is finding what works best along with a great bullet selection for this cartridge.

H1000, FED GM215M primers, Nosler brass and a 215 Berger. As recommended earlier I would stay far away from R22 it is to Temp sensitive. If going with the R powders look at R26 and R23. Personally I would go with a 200+gr bullet. Why use a 180gr in this big of a case? Save the 180's for 30-06's. Another powder guys are liking in the 300 Win Mag is N570. I haven't tried in mine but it is a great powder in other guns; expensive though.

Ive found it to be a non issue in two 300wm with rl22
I develop my loads in the summer and test all year my eldx load was developed in +20 weather and was just shooting it last week in -33 had .5 moa difference in impact at 600m
My 6.5x284 sitting beside it using h-4831 yeilded simular results
I use rl22 in my 300wm, 243win, 6.5x55 with out temp issues or at least any that would matter for my purposes

rem338win 02-18-2019 11:50 AM

The two most accurate powders I have used in a 300 WM under 180s is H4350 and H1000. They gave good velocity and very consistent ES.

7828 and RL25 were also good with 200gr bullets.

HV-100 is one of the most efficient powders there is for the .300 WM. It's just a bit slower than H4350 and provides the lowest velocity spreads of any powders I have tried with that cartridge. It's also a great powder for the 6.5 Swede and 7mm RM. Temp stability is great as well. From O deg to 70 deg there is about 100 fps difference. Definately worth a try in your .300wm with bullets from 165 to 220 gr,

Ice Fishing Maniac 02-25-2019 09:18 AM

RL-22 between 74-75grains with Federal 215gm primers and 180gr Accubonds have been my Sako m75ss medicine since I started reloading back in 2005.

WS 780 powder or H1000 would be others to try.

Dick284 02-25-2019 09:35 AM

Most powders from the burn rate of 4350 to around H1000 or there about’s will work.

I intentionally have quit using Alliant powders as their availability suffers quite often, and what’s the point of using a powder or component that is missing from the shelves more than it is on the shelves. Also there is no place that regularity carries Alliant powders in bulk either.

Thanks Salavee ,I will give hv-100 a try in my 7mm rem plus the 6.5 and 300 win and see how it goes.I use to use H 1000 and started trying different powders, but the H 1000 was one of the better ones by far.

lannie 02-26-2019 02:09 AM

I use 73.5 grs. of RL 22 with 180 accubonds for a chronoed avg. of 2844 fps. in a Sako A5. Groups the best out of a few different powders I tested.
