Jasper, mountains rock!....

It certainly has been a slow start this summer for number of trips. But quality makes up for quantity 

Went to Jasper this past Friday. Had plans to leave early but after checking many weather reports, 120 km per hr wind gusts doesn’t seem to mix...
Luckily most of the weather went further south. Headed out into rainstorms. Got in pretty late as in 12:30 a.m. or so. I was up though by 5 a.m. ....lots of coffee needed and headed up to Maligne. Pretty uneventful until I hit around Medicine lake and spooked a grizzly. Looked to be about 2 years and big enough. I slowed down to make sure it would not cross in front of me and was greeted with a nervous grizzly spectacle. Sorry, no pics. Sometimes it is not worth it to reach for the cam...or necessary.

Got out on the lake and it was an eerie fog everywhere. Pics really do not do this much justice:

A “spooky” look back at home bay

Some quick trolling and a throat sample let to indicator fishing a bunch of these, chrome bullets with tons of jumping strength. Each one seemed better than the last for fight. Had one that was pushing 4-5 lbs but got off on jump #11 or 12. Simple power!

This one I practiced some “poor handling techniques” on. Beauty orange flesh...

Caught lot of brookies in the afternoon. Nothing huge like usual. Maybe 17 inch tops but still nice.

Decided to try a new lake in the mountains on Sunday. Had a really, really slow start until I found them. When I did they were there in groups. I finally managed a hook up with this monster. 2 times into my backing and the 2 time into my backing was fierce. Thought I might lose the fish as it went past my entire fly line by about 5-6 feet with no sign of stopping. So, I took control with a lot of sideway pressure ...

Finally got a beast to the net and within a couple of netting tries I had this:

Thought about releasing it but hey, I came for some fun and food.

My PB brookie by a landslide

Warning

I just finished deleting 4 backhand swipes at the OP. Last time I checked he wasn't doing anything wrong by keeping a fish. We are vigilant in trying to encourage users to share pics of the outdoors, and not put up with griping. If you feel the need to whine or complain, go in the bathroom, look in the mirror, and keep the negative crap to yourself. Period.

Beautiful fish!

Not meaning to hijack the thread, but if a guy had a few days to spend in the Jasper area, any suggests on lakes that would be suitable for a Fish Cat 4 type small pontoon boat? I don't have a real boat, and some of the lakes in Jasper look large enough to be dangerous for a guy in a float tube.

That was my first thought as well! I have a pretty good idea where it came from.

Beautiful fish! Ah weather...nice thing predictions are only partially accurate. The water color in the parks lakes is another wonderful quality to fishing in Jasper. Thanks for posting.

Thanks Deep. Given our last exchange, your post is appreciated. Cheers!
I could easily move near Jasper...I envy Speckle in this regard. I tried the move near Jasper ploy on the wife last night. Let's just say it ended up in an epic fail... :)

Thanks 58 :)
By the way, I ordered one of those bug shirts to deal with mosquitos and the like. Nice looking product. I'll have to try it out on some of my next river trips. The one to the RDR was disgustingly bug ridden...

FlyDog 07-19-2018 09:26 PM

Damn fine brookie!!

pikeman06 07-20-2018 01:35 PM

Nice work buddy. Thanks for the pictures. Real quality brookie there. Sure taste better than our pothole mudpuppies I bet. Almost forget what a real trout tastes like.

LJalberta 07-24-2018 11:29 AM

Amazing Fish! Thanks for sharing the pictures and story!

Ayr 07-27-2018 02:33 PM

Congrats on the PB Brookie Snap!
Thanks for sharing the pics.
Cheers, Ayr.

Johnnyg313 07-27-2018 08:06 PM

Good little looking fish!

How’d it taste?

Red Bullets 07-30-2018 10:08 AM

Looks like a good day fishing. Nice pics. I too wonder how the brookie was for taste.

You seem like a hradcore angler...If you like fishing the parks and want to fish a river... try the area where the Mistaya river enters the North Saskatchewan river near Saskatchewan River Crossing on Hwy 93. The Alberta record 'river run' rainbow trout was caught in this area 20 years or so ago. I think it was 12 lbs. and change. not sure what time of year it was taken. Probably before or after snow runoff.

Nothing but tasty red/orange flesh. Lots of meals out of that fish and very much appreciated by the diners :)
