If someone wanted to shoot a few wolves, Where would the best place be to do so? Not more then 1.5-2 hrs from Calgary.

You could try most anywhere on Crown land West of the Forestry boundary West of Sundre or Caroline.

I was out hunting yesterday along the Fallentimber Creek in 314, getting close to 316.

Ungulates were scarce and spooky. Wolf tracks and scat all along the riverbed.

Dark Wing 11-08-2010 11:28 AM

Missed another one on Saturday a nice gray all by it's self. Lots of wolves in the mountain wmu's.

1899b 11-08-2010 12:52 PM

had a grey wolf under 50 yards from me. If there wasn't any CN guys working on the tracks at the time I would have hammered him.

Logan3 11-17-2010 08:58 PM

we had 400 cow calf pairs on our lease land south west of water valley and came home 15 calves short the neighbour was 17 short. Not sayin all of them were wolf kills but when you dont need to look for wolf sign or wolves them selves its not hard to figure out where the calves went.

FOTW 11-18-2010 01:18 AM

I'll be heading out in January, West of Caroline I guess. Anywhere else people could recommend? I will shoot as many as possible.

Hunting Wolves

When hunting wolves, what calibre and bullet weights should be generally used? I have 3 rifle calibers available that I can use, what’s the best 30-06, 25-06 or 223?

wolfkilr 11-21-2010 07:18 AM

wolf cartridge

Of the three I would pick the 25-06

Any of the three would work well though.

jetboat175 12-18-2010 03:20 AM

wolf cartridge

I use a 25-06 in a Ruger #1 varmit rifle with 75 gr. balistic tips. I have only shot 1 wolf but the caliber is perfect.

Saw these on my way home from work this morning. WMU 527. That's my neighbors cow pasture, and it is two miles from my house. My wife thinks she saw one in the yard a few days ago.

Wish I had time to hunt them.

wwbirds 12-18-2010 12:13 PM

What is the distance from the camera operator to the farthest wolf Keg??
thanks
Rob

Hunter86 12-18-2010 12:21 PM

What are they worth?

Does anybody know what a wolf is worth these days?

wwbirds 12-18-2010 12:26 PM

Was another threqd a few days ago where a furbuyer was quoted as pying $40. for whole wolf dropped off and anywhere from $150. up for properly stretched and cured hides. think it was mentioned under a coyote value thread. Sure wish we had some around here to supplement coyotes.

KegRiver 12-18-2010 12:38 PM

Rob,

I would estimate the furthest wolf at 6 to 700 yards. When I first noticed them they were 2 to 300 yards from the highway. I was wishing I had my 218 instead of my camera. But they were well out of range by the time I got stopped.
Pretty much out of range for my camera as well.
I know that the creek is on this quarter so it is somewhat less then a half mile to the trees. The furthest wolf is maybe 20 yards from the trees, 700 is probably right.

Hunter,

At the March auction, Wolves sold for an average of $92.28 US with a top price paid of $440.00

300-510 12-18-2010 07:34 PM

Any of u guys ever use primos power dogg caller on wolves?

predatorzedge 12-19-2010 08:37 PM

Nice pictures there Keg. There were to more wolves gotten here last week, one snared on the beaver an one shot.

wwbirds 12-19-2010 09:48 PM

Thanks that camera makes them look closer because of the clarity. I used to live in wolf country in northern ontario and they are rarely out of the thick stuff so hard to hunt. Most kills there I suspect are incidental to hunting big game where they stumble on or surprize a wolf.

leeaspell 12-20-2010 12:32 AM

Do you need a tag or anything to shoot them?

a gun would sure help.

in SK, we need permits, but a couple years ago, they were giving cattle owners pretty much free access to them with no permits as there was a population explosion.

and they continue to move south

An Alberta resident can shoot them without a license.

They sure are. A farmer shot a wolf last Feb. just 60 km nw of Swift Current.
