card swipe to buy a rifle

is anybody familiar with this?
is it already a thing?
swipe your pal and info goes to rcmp during your purchase.

Never heard of this. Also what are you swiping this card on? If I recall there is no mag strip nor barcode to scan.

6MT 03-08-2018 08:23 PM

Yeah, I've never heard of this either.

airbornedeerhunter 03-08-2018 08:24 PM

I call BS. Most places simply ask to see your PAL, some will enter it into the system to make sure it is still valid but I think this is clickbait. Even if they did record anything you can walk out the door, and hand it someone else with a pal and then poof-it doesn't exist.

Unless you can provide some actual evidence I think it's a little paranoid.

I'm not swiping.

will future cards have a mag strip?

If you have a PAL or even a POL . I think the RCMP all ready know you have a rifle

Its the people that have riffles and no PAL or POL the RCPM worry about.

tool 03-08-2018 08:31 PM

The POL no longer exists, the Harper government decided anyone with a POL might as well have a PAL.

Still have mine ,and its good till 2019

There is no card swipe to buy a rifle

CaberTosser 03-08-2018 09:24 PM

Has the OP seen this in a store recently? Is this some new thing?

If such a thing is being instituted is it simply for the vendor to verify that a PAL is valid? I had to pull out my PAL to see if it even had a mag-stripe and it does. The presence of such a feature generally means that the issuer intends to make use of it; if not, why have it there at all?

If such a thing is to be used, they would need to tread carefully regarding it saving data (what system doesn't?). In-store purchases that scan the card might drive more people to online buying, as if they needed any more incentive.....

You have a PAL. Not a POL
POL has not been valid since 2015

Says possession only on it .
Means I can own a riffle and buy amo.
But I can not buy a new riffle.
They may have only stopped handing them out in 2015

I am sure come 2019 I will only be able to get a PAL

My POL does have a mag strip on it .

Also just used it to buy amo.

Chargerguy 03-08-2018 09:35 PM

This happened to me at Cabelas when I bought my wife's Christmas present back in December. I gave them my PAL to fill out the paperwork and they either scanned the barcode or swiped it (I can't remember which). I immediately asked what he just did and was told it was for their record keeping and that the info goes nowhere. Haven't bought a firearm there since. They keep written records anyway so I'm not sure if there's more to this.

-JR- 03-08-2018 09:41 PM

I would say they swiped the info as they need proof that they did not sell a riffle with out a PAL

Your POL is now a PAL, you can buy a rifle with it.
When you apply for your new card you will get a PAL, or you can apply now for a new card. If you have not completed the safely course you will have to complete it if you let your POL ( now a PAL) expired with renewing

One of the issues with these stores keeping copys of who bought what is when a Criminal steals this info and them uses it to gain access to who owns what type of firearm.
This to me is worse then the Police knowing what I own.

That wouldn’t be a POL. It would be a minors possession license.

I have a bar code on my pal. Once when I was at a UFA farm store I saw a salesman scan the back of a pal when another customer was buying 22 ammo.

covey ridge 03-11-2018 11:53 AM

Come to think of it, when a sales person uses the on line site to verify a pal number, there is no need to type in the long pal number as it can be scanned.

petew 03-11-2018 12:53 PM

Does it realy matter if the scan, swipe or write down the information as long as you walk away with the gun or ammo ? They scan your bank card, and credit card too .
I could care less what they scan or swipe as long as I get what I want .

There are lots more important things to worry about in my life.

Smokinyotes 03-11-2018 01:44 PM

I prefer that no one writes down my PAL when buying a nonrestricted. Writing PAL verified on the bill of sale meets all legal requirements.

How a business decides they should show their due diligence in the verification of a valid PAL when a purchase is made is likely driven by input from people like their legal counsel. If their decision to swipe or scan or write down your information is that bothersome to you, you can always take your business elsewhere. Or you could go with a buddy. Where you both handle and admire said firearm. Then one of you says they will take it. When they ask for your PAL present it. They scan, copy or what ever with it. Then the other one of you ponies up the cash for the sale. Then the one who presented the PAL says, real clear like, I’ll hand it over to you in the parking lot. If there’s any storing on the gathered information it’ll be useless in about 7 minutes when you guys are outside the store.

That card is now a PAL. You can buy a firearm with it. When you renew in 2019, you will receive PAL.

CaberTosser 03-20-2018 10:00 AM

How did this PAL card scanner show up prior to the new legislation being tabled? Sounds like gov’t jumped the gun.

When even firearms owners don't make the effort to keep current with the licensing/regulations, It's no wonder the general public has no clue.

Nothing to do with the government. When verifying a pal on the government site it was required to enter the pal number. Someone found out that instead of keying in the numbers, they could be scanned into the required field by any bar code scanner attached to the computer. It was really handy especially those all thumbs types with dyslexia.:)
