I Guess I Sounded Delicious

I went out to my usual spot on Tuesday for likely the last time this season as there haven't been many animals around, pretty disappointed, plus my moose decoy was still there. Check my camera and there were a couple good sized WT bucks on the camera, one had a drop tine, but no action and head home intending Wednesday will be the last day.
Wed 5:45 AM I get to the trail head, fresh snow, so I walk up the outline 3 KM and nary a track. Crap. Walk back to the meadow, set up decoy, make a cow call. Go back to sit spot. Coffee. Shiver a bit. 45 min later, wander out to decoy make another cow call. Scan the meadow and I can hear something crunching through the snow from the SW corner, coming quick. Crap why did i leave my bow at sit spot.... and....a wolf appears. Then two more, one with the first one, the other moving to the left. Now three more show, two groups of three. One on left is about 70 yards away, right is 50. Now I really wish I had my bow as they are focused intently on me....or least the decoy, which is slathered in cow urine, with me right behind it. I start back to get my bow, looking over my shoulder, they watch for about 10 seconds and off they went. Cool experience for sure and as a side note about their population levels, my uncle has hunted this area since 1989 and he never saw a single wolf in that time. Managed to get pic of the closer group below. |
Cool. It’s just too bad you didn’t have a rifle and whacked a few.

That's very true, at least I should have had the bow handy to snag one. Lesson learned.

Once in a lifetime event.
I had two wolves come up on me one winter when I was about 12yrs old and I was walking home from my rabbit trapline across the Clearwater river. I was packing a crack barrel pellet gun. |
Cool story, thanks for sharing.
We called a pack in while elk hunting a few years ago and I managed to get arrows into two of them. It's one of the most memorable moments I've ever had in the bush. |
Cool story and picture.
Too bad that you couldn't let the air out of one or two. |
Congrats on a very unique and rare experience.

Man that would have been a little hard on the hold heart rate eh!

Neat experience for sure. Which wmu?

If this happened to me I would probably wake up and wish it had been real. CONGRATS on an awesome experience. Thanks for sharing and snapping the pic.

I had a similar experience a few years ago out hunting with my boy who was 8 at the time. While walking through a cut block I seen something moving in the fog ahead of us I told him to crouch down by a little pine tree while I snuck up the little hill in front of us hoping to find a bull or a buck standing on the other side. When I crested it I heard something come out of the bush line about twenty yards away to the left of me. A beautiful sight to see a grey wolf materialize out of the fog like a ghost. I realized he was starring at my son and making his way over to him I put one round through his chest and a second up the backdoor when he turned for the bush.

Out there, expect the unexpected. That is a once in a life time opportunity missed. Next time, you should always be on standby. Cool story and nice photos. Thanks for sharing with us.
