Weird things you see on the highway

On Friday I was heading out to Fairmont BC and a few km west of the Sunshine exit I saw an oddity travelling eastbound that reminded me there is still no shortage of weird people. It was the first touring unicycle I'd ever seen. That's it, but its weird enough. Highway travel on a unicycle with what appeared to be approximately a 48" diameter wheel.

What have you seen while on the highway that set off your internal "What the &^$#?"

Seen a 185 Cessna about 100km south of Ft McMurray on hwy 63 one time, a wtf moment for sure. Ran out of fuel and did an emergency landing.

Almost smacked into a pretty decent sized black bear last week at hiway speed by about 12ft. sucker was boot'n across road quick, then nearly took out the bottom fence wire racing into the bush.

I almost got an ostrich on HWY2 years ago, ran across the road in front of me by Leduc and the airport.

Been on the road for 40 years so there have been many Huh? moments.

$250,000 motorhome fully engaged in fire was a scary one. Especially with dude standing 20 feet from the propane tanks. Entire 35 footer was ashes in 5 minutes.

Biggest grizzly I've ever seen in my life foraging just off the shoulder of the highway south of Banff on my way to Radium. And 2 carfulls of Japanese tourists, out of their vehicles, snapping pics from 15-20 feet away. Those wily Japanese buggers. Same bear in the exact same spot 3 days later as I was headed home. He looked fatter too....and I thought I caught a brief scent of wasabi as I went by.

A young dude running hell bent for leather down highway 28 near Redwater with the trucks laying down fresh oil just a 1/4 mile up. Down he went, rolled around a few times in the fresh oil, managed to get to his feet completely slathered in crude, did a couple of Michael Jacksons, then started running again. Right into the ditch where in a "hold my beer" moment he piled head on into a sign post. Obviously a very motivated young man.

Best what just happened moment ever for me was a few years back but wasnt on the highway. My younger brother and I were parked outside a liquor store in west Edm waiting for another younger brother to return with beers. Car pulls up beside us and parks. Young guy about 21 and his stunningly gorgeous and spectacularly built girlfriend get out and head towards the liquor store. All of a sudden she turns, walks back to my side of the truck, lifts her t-shirt and bra up to her chin and says, "What do you think of these?", chuckles and walks into the store...This was the only time in my life I can remember being rendered utterly speechless.

My neighbour's story from the 70's,
Was driving along an came up to a brief case in middle of road. He comes to a stop, opens door, grabs it & suddenly as he grasped it, it was yanked hard & pulled him out of car abit. He quickly seen the fishing line as he slammed the door peeling out & in review mirror 2 men could be seen running out from the weedy ditch.

So there I was, minding my own business, riding my touring unicycle on the highway close to the Sunshine exit. This guy in a plumbing van slows down and stares at me. I've seen enough movies to know how this ends up so I crank the unicycle up to warp 5 and get out of Dodge. Pronto.

My public address system hidden behind the grille is broken so I can't currently play "duelling banjo's" when I run down unicyclists in order to bring them back to my captive grizzlies. its a live-action money making venture where Japanese tourists pay handsomely to watch cage-matches. I found that song would put people in a real panic and they'd be more prone to making fatal mistakes that led to easy captures.

I'm curious how the guy knew I was in a plumbing van because I'm not currently running any signage? I'll more resemble one of those 'adventure van' 4X4 campers until my graphics are on...

I always worry about stuff like this—the classic lure someone to a stop with something in the middle of the road then just out of the bushes and rob them. Or remember the story of the good samaritan who stopped to help some people who had crashed (or maybe were broken down? Don’t recall) just for them to steal his truck and drive off?

Careful what you stop for on the road.

Mid 80s my buddy and I were heading up into the Porcupine Hills on a weekday morning, and there was a younger girl of about 10 years old walking down Hwy 785 in a ballet tutu by herself. You don't see that every day lol.

OR a Hutterite. Can't believe how many of the colonies have those Benz. If one has to have a van that's a pretty classy way to go.

Yup, I would just assume Hutterite.

Passed the Oscar Meyer wienermobile on an interstate in West Virginia. Interesting to see a yellow hotdog barreling down the highway

I didn't witness, but a guy from work just had a kayak come flying through his front end of his SUV on the highway recently. Enough damage that it's probably a write off. I thought that it was pretty funny to have a collision with a kayak on the highway. Imagine that discussion with insurance.....

Just seen two new Peterbilt trucks being piggybacked by another new Peterbilt and the back truck came unhooked from the fifth wheel plate and it hit the ditch between the double lanes. Good thing it was a divided hiway or that could have been serious, have a head on with a run away truck.

Greatwest 05-27-2019 07:28 AM

Almost hit a whole heard of buffalo on highway by Outlook,SK years ago at about 2am. Called the cops they went out and directed traffic the rest of the night. The whole heard of about 100 head got out so the cops sat there the rest of the night until morning when the farmer got them back into the pasture. Those big buggers would have done some serious damage if I would have hit them.

Riding my motorcycle on highway 40 near Kananaskis, a black bear come booting out of the bush running downhill across the highway. I slow down a bit and the Corolla in front of me does too. The bear slams into the side of the Corolla at full speed behind the driver's door leaving a dent, then scrambles to it's feet and continues downhill into the bush. Explain that to your insurance agent.

Not really the highway but still a road. I was volunteering with a cadet corps doing parking control at a trade show when this car pulls up to the checkpoint. When the tinted window rolls down the driver, a beautiful brunette in her early to mid twenties is sitting there totally naked. I was about 16 at the time. Needless to say she got to park where ever she wanted. :)

I was driving to Pheonix. We had just got out of Kingman Arizona. Fresh black pavement, not even lines on it. A couch, wrapped in black plastic fell off of a vehicle. It was pitch black outside, 2 am or something. All of those things led to me copping it at 70mph/120kmh. That was a scary ride from there to our destination not know what kind of damage that had really happened with another 4-5 hours still to go. Thankfully no damage at all.

couple times i have been passed by cars on the highway where the female passenger was leaned over into the lap of the male driver. Sometimes driving a rig you see things.

I quite vaguely remember those good old days. Then a guy decides to get married and those fun times come to a grinding halt.

Solid gold, right there. ;)

For me, just some odd things... Like a Targa top coming off an Vette, spinning like a frisbee towards my windshield, then miraculously slamming flat onto the road just before I drove over it - and in a position such that I didn't even have to swerve.

Or the car passing me at high speed, then going into a flat spin - clear summer day, dry pavement... Coming to rest perfectly on the shoulder just as the rest of us passed...

Ah, the 401.

About five years ago driving back from my cabin to Edmonton just passed Valley View there was about a 25 foot speed boat in the Meridian in between the highways that had slid off the trailer and dug a ditch in the asphalt till it hit the dirt wish I had my camera

Right after 911 when the buildings came down in new York I was in a parking lot of casino counting cash with my cab light on,it was around 3.30 am and every one was gone except me.I always at night cash out last that way no one in line behind me sees how much cash I have.

This casino was beside a large lake and I heard this boat coming with no lights nothing,he dropped off a guy and the boat split and all lights were now on in the boat,i found this a bit odd.

A set of car lights came on and the guy walked over to it with two hand bags and they stayed there about 300 yards away,so I fired up my diesel f250 and started to drive away when that car pull up beside me on my passenger side real fast so I stopped.
They never seen my truck tucked away in the dark corner near the bush ,plus the upper parking lot was 20 feet higher where I was sitting. They figured they were alone that night.

I stopped and rolled down my passenger window and there were two guys and the driver asked me how do I get to Toronto in a bad middle east accent .

Toronto threw me right off because I was 3 miles from the highway beside a lake and how the hell did you get here I asked my self ,i slowly leaned back because I got a real bad feeling something was going down and I was going to get shoot.

I seen something in the passengers hand and swore it was a hand gun,so I said follow me and bolted towards the highway and when I arrived at the highway which I had to go that way anyways I stopped in front of a husky cash station and pointed towards the east and drove away.

I never went a 100 yards and there was an opp car so I flashed my lights and he stopped,i told him the deal and he took off going east and within 30 seconds two other opp cars doing 80 miles an hour blew by me then two more cars.I thought heck what the hell.

They stopped that car it had 4 handguns ,400000 in usa cash plus one was on a usa most wanted list.I read it about it and wanted my reward and the opp sat me down and told me stay the hell out of this,he knew me and knew I wasn't broke, but he said for the sake of your family just walk away, plus you may never see a cent.Plus he told me your very lucky you drove away and never went near there car because you wouldn't be here.

Very strange story and the strangest thing I ever seen on a road.

He told me the FBI and other usa law enforcement wanted this guy bad,it was on a thusday night sept 13th 2001 this happened ,so go figure why this guy came by lake from the usa with lights off on the boat.

Strangest think I ever seen in my life. And I truly believe that if my street smarts weren't on high alert they wanted me to step out and get me in close for directions and blow me away, but I drove away saying follow me .The one cop told me the other was from Toronto,so he knew how to get back to the highway, there was only one road in and out with no turns or off roads and impossible to get lost.

Coworker got a call about some luggage that yard saled on the interstate. Turns out it was what’s left of some dudes ATV that fell out the back of his truck... I’ve seen ramps from equipment trailers, a lot of fuel cans, semi truck chains, igloo type coolers and roof pods. Nothing too exciting.

I was surveying in the SW States in the mid 90's, on a cool fall morning in Oklahoma there appeared to be dark strange bumps all over a particular stretch of road, I could feel slight bumps as I went over them so I stopped and opened the door for a closer look...the road was covered in big, hairy, ugly spiders, hundreds of them...according to my rodman, who was from Texas, it was common for them to crawl on to the warm asphalt at night.

Headed back to Alberta on same work hitch and somewhere in Montana in the middle of the night I can see a fire up ahead, a big one...as I get closer its a pickup truck with a man and woman standing next to it. I pull over and grab my fire extinguisher but the man stops me and says "Let it burn", I got back in my truck and kept heading north, met firetrucks a couple miles down the road.

huntinstuff 05-27-2019 03:33 PM

I was on the Chinchaga Road and turned a corner and out of the corner of my eye saw something......a caribou running in the ditch next to my truck. Stayed with me for about a km then just stopped and looked at me drive away.....

I was 16. Drove to High Level one afternoon to visit this girl and I picked up a hitchhiker....He was dressed like Mork from Ork...head to toe. I thought how could this possibly go wrong

Driving in Redondo Beach Calif to drop this lady off at home and pulled up to a stop light and this car pulls up beside me. Guy rolls his window down and says "what kinda car is that"? I said "its a Ford Probe".....He says "f'in cool"........Tommy Lee from Motley Crue
