Shotgun launches white hull
So I’m fairly new to shotguns, been only using them the past few years. Never any issues until I tried some steel shots. When I shoot a shell, a white hull will follow out of the muzzle after the shot. This has never happened with my other shells. Is this normal for Winchester steel shots?

The wad?

Wad
Sounds like the wad, a plastic sleeve like part that protects the shot and helps keep it together some. All shot shells have them, maybe you are noticing it more because of the white color.

As it's been said, it's the wad. All of your shells do it, you just have ent noticed. I had the same question when j first started shooting shotgun too.
Wads can come in many different cars but white or transparent white is normally what you'll see. But I have shot black and orange was as well. |
Yep, they even sell trap loads with highly visible loads so you can get an idea if you are shooting out from or behind etc...
Welcome to the shooting sports. |
Agreed, it's the wad. (cup that holds the shot inside the hull) If you were watching someone else shoot, you'd probably see one fly out with every shot.
Welcome to shotgunning, it's an awfully nice place to be. :) I have the least amount of practical use for a shotgun..yet they tend to be what I'm drawn to most. Go figure. |
You may now say officially....you’ve shot your wad.

Wads were designed to keep the shot and powder separated. They used to be fiber wads not plastic and did not enclose the sides of the shot . They were flat and you could get different thicknesses. As a kid I used to help dad reload shot shells and I got to place the wads . They have evolved to help protect the shot from deforming and now with steel to help protect the bore of the shotgun.
