How are elk calling out there?
 

Been out few days now with bow in hand, seen a herd couple days in row, but have yet to hear a peep out of them. I'm north of Edmonton, what's everyone hearing out there?

I just got back from a 3 day trip didn't hear anything. Last year this time it was insane. Walked lots of game trails and cut lines.

We have been calling for a couple of weeks now and they are starting to respond once in a while. Sometimes not a peep for a couple of days. I have seen a couple of them going insane already, but that is about it.

I think the elk are using ATV's to move around this year,,,


I hear ATV engines, then the ATV engine shuts off,,, then I hear ELK BUGLING !

Bahahahahahah, that's awesome. One has to wonder, when in history did that ever work? The first elk season...ever???

Now moose....moose can be that dumb. Must be a bunch of moose hunters.

Back to the op; they are calling but not really fired up. My guess is most of the action is happening by moonlight. some cool weather is needed

:sHa_sarcasticlol: those are not too bad. The worst ones are the other way around. When you hear an elk talking back to you and closing in and then you hear an atv engine and the hunt is over. We had already had one of those this year, except it wasn't an atv but a f-350 moving through the bush on a quad trail "scouting" for the rifle season.

So far this has been the best first two weeks I've seen in as long as I can remember. I've hunted at least one (but usually both) primetime / day since August 25th. I've heard and seen bulls on all but two occasions.

Are you up north? I was out in 406 all weekend and didn't hear a thing.

Lots of action where I am. Been out for a week so far and have have heard bugles and mews everyday. Been within 40 yards of multiple elk but no shot opportunities.

Yeah I'm hunting 505,510 zones

They are sponsored by Honda so you won't catch them broken down on the side of the trail.....tuff season ahead :)

Had one faint bugle saturday then an hour later he showed himself except he was only a 4 point...only thing we heard tho..hopefully the big weather change will help this week

Buddy killed his bull yesterday, it was bugled in.

Having the best calling response in years in 312. Also the best season opener ever as well. 2 bulls down in our group.

I was on the herd last night going back and forth got in to 30 yards but no shot,had become too dark. DAMN.

Was hunting sheep yesterday and Listened to at least a dozen bulls non stop all day long in the valleys I was in

Hearing plenty up here until Friday regretting letting a few walk now

Hearing nothing in 408, finding lots of rams though. Their white bums got me so excited the one morning

I was 40-50 yards from three bulls there this weekend. One Legal Bull let out a nice bugle then disappeared.

Hearing nothing in 406 when we were out. We called in a bull with a cow call sept 3rd in a different zone and my buddy put him down. Been a fun start to the season!

Sporadic in different areas, haven't heard a peep in a zone north of Edmonton but co worker arrowed a decent bull that came in just screaming.

Tried calling in two different near by areas today and didn't hear a thing. One place was where a very good size bull was screaming like crazy just a few days ago. Quite windy though. At least it's cooling down a bit.

Good job on that cow, whoever put her down :)

i've been trying near Nordegg. Haven't heard a Peep!

Elk are going hard right now. Saw 5 herds yesterday and a bunch of satellite bulls.

Very hard hunting around there always found they are quiet there few elk but hunted hard
