Best Place for Wolf Hunting
Hello all,
I would like to go for Wolf hunting. Where do you recommend for wolf hunting ? Thanks |
anywhere west of 22 and / or north of 16
|
In the bush
|
Just a rough guide heavy bush areas around Rocky, Edson, Whitecourt, Athabasca all have high wolf numbers.
|
Wmu 338. Wolf lake road (no im not kidding), south of highway 16
339, wherever you see tracks crossing the roads Ya ha tinda area 346, north of highway 16/Edson. Lots of bush roads to get back in there. Saw tracks/heard howls in all those areas this year. Not likely a coincidence that I did not see deer in any of them either |
Right next to the bait pile. Lol
|
I always enjoy when someone wants to hunt wolf and half if not more of the comments are useless.
How many times do I read on this forum about the need to decrease the wolf population? |
i agree they need to be managed however i think the reason you wont see too many people say much more is because its there hunting grounds come sept to nov.

Probably one of the toughest animals to hunt
In Alberta so not knowing your relative experience on wolf or even coyote hunting I would suggest hiring a pro guide like Redfrog and learn the ropes instead of learning everything the hard way like most of us did.

Spots near Rocky
Hey Guys!
Wondering if anyone knows of any "Problem areas" west of Rocky Mountain House. I tried to hunt a spot near there a few years back, but was told by a local trapper that most of the game animals had been pushed out by wolves. I'm looking to add Wolves to my list of animals to shoot if I see them. Mainly looking to hunt them after November when they start to get full winter coats! Thanks! |
Not hard to find west of rocky put some miles on your boots
|
A lot of guys hunt coyotes on sleds in the winter time. Is this a technique that works for wolves as well?
Wolves are pretty smart, so I would think that they would bail out if they heard a sled coming. But one would also think the Coyotes would do the same. |

The tricky thing about them is that they can move long distances in a short time, especially in months when they don't need to keep near the denning sites.

Lots of wolves west of Sundre and Caroline - as well as west of Rocky towards FTR. Have also seen a few animals and lots of signs last season south of the NSR (429) - by lots I mean you had trouble going a few hundred yards without crossing tracks / scat. I also have not seen the deer numbers that low in years so by all means, please find as many as you can.
Find an area with lots of sign (lots of 3-5 years old cuts in the area) and have a seat... sit long enough and you are bound to see a few. Cheers |

Is there much for game? There are supplemental tags for those zones. Sent from my iPad using Tapatalk |
Best place I've hunted is out by Brazeu, not because there are more wolves there than anywhere else I've been but because those disgusting massive bejesus cutblocks they made out there force the wary critters out into the open where you can find them easyer. We found 3 packs in 2 days and saw well over a dozen wolves, up in Northern Alberta where I'm from this level of success would be pretty much impossible despite the fact that we've got at least as many wolves.

Try 408. saw a pack of six (not a six pack) last fall along hwy 40 healthy beautiful ungulate eating animals. Between trans Canada hwy and Peter Lougheed park boundry.

The best cattleman I know once told me: if you see actually see a wolf (not just a track), it means there's lots.
He went on to say: when I say lots, i mean if you see one, there are so many dogs in the bush there's likely not enough room for the one you saw to physically fit in the bush! This is great advice. And bordering on true. Anywhere where anyone has seen a wolf should be considered a problem area, and the best place to start. On that note...I can vouche there is lots of wolves north, and south of Fort McMurray! I can also vouche I spent lots of time in 349 last year, early fall and there is lots there as well! |

if you call your Bio for the area your hunting he/she will let you know of problem areas ..farmers complaints etc ..ph 310-0000 and ask for the zone Bio
I live where the wolves are plentiful .. some trappers are Pro wolf trapper so they may be sparse ... other lines have packs of 9 to 17 I just call them in .. especially if I hear them go out in bush at night where there are sign/tracks and try howling ..you can get a answer then have a place thought out for next morning ..set up wait for 1/2 a hour of quite .. then distress call ... I use a Elk reed too get them too come in .. n mix in a wolf howl 4 wolves in 6 days .. 2 out of 3 twice http://www.outdoorsmenforum.ca/showthread.php?t=230820 http://www.outdoorsmenforum.ca/showthread.php?t=231443 http://www.outdoorsmenforum.ca/showthread.php?t=317173 here is the pic's of the wolves(dates on pictures) Good luck remember when calling you may get other predators too David:) Quote:
