Funny things you have overheard at a gun counter

Was in at a un-named gun counter today and the guy behind the counter was showing a young fella a .30-06. I overheard the young guy say, "Yah I have a .270 already but I need something with more knockdown power than it has.....that's why I need a .30-06"....."I just need to have a heavy one so that the recoil isn't too much"...."I can't count how many deer I have lost because the .270 just isn't enough gun...."

Let the games begin....

At the counter.

Customer: Is a 300 magnum enough for deer?

In the old Backcountry Sports in Red Deer I heard another store patron bragging about packing his Glock 20 for defense when he was bowhunting.

Sadly, before I became a hunter or knowledgeable about guns (outside of the ones in my video games), one of those goofballs was me. I was traipsing through Russell Sports and I joined a conversation; I related to staff a story my buddy had told me about his uncle putting him in a chair to shoot his .375 H&H when he was 12 and I remember calling it a .475 H&H. I got that look.

Customer: Do they put bolts on the left side for hunters who want to shoot behind themselves.:scared0018:

While passing by the Cabelas gun counter recently I overheard a rather "large" salesman tell an inquiring customer "With this new browning long range rifle, all you need to do is set up on a cutline and you're good for 2 miles". I looked at the salesman and shook my head while I walked past...

Last spring I was in Cabellas inquiring about a Henry Mare's leg .22. I was told they quit making em ... aka we don't carry em so you can't get em anymore.:rolleye2:

I went on over to P&D and picked one up next day.

IBEX 09-20-2012 10:24 PM

over heard one guy complaining about how big of a hole his .270 made on his deer, so the guy behind the counter suggested he should get a .308

Same sales guy...can I take a look at that Weatherby Mark V. His reply, we don't have one right now. There were 4 on the rack.

I heard a kid tell a gun counter guy that he needed something bigger than a 7mm-08 as he had shot a couple moose "4 or 5 times in the lungs and they never died".
I just about fell over laughing.

Comstar 09-20-2012 10:46 PM

The guy behind the counter said he thought savages were ugly!

The madness!!

catnthehat 09-20-2012 10:53 PM

"Round balls in a muzzle loader are no good for bears"
I swear to God I don't think the kid had a huntign licence for more than 2 years!!
Another one was " the 28 gauge is okay for rabbits and grouse, but that's it"
Neither went unaswered by me , seeing how my hawken shooting a .58 round ball has accounted for a fair number of bears, and my main hunting shotgun for everything upland is a 28!!:thinking-006:

Bass Pro employee telling a guy that the Tikka T3 in 7mag he was looking at was a flat shooter to 700 yards.

avb3 09-20-2012 11:04 PM

Sounds like my brother in law has been teaching those sale people on ballistics... you know, the guy who always takes his deer at 600 yards and only doing neck shots with his .300 mag which he holds 6 inches high.

Maybe it looks that way with the bore sighted in it...

Thats me, but I only take running shots at that range to give the poor deer a chance. LOL:thinking-006:

This wasn't at a gun counter but it still made me laugh like mad....ran into another hunter one time and asked him if he had any luck. He said, "well I missed a 180 white-tail at about 150 yards.....I am so used to shooting 600 hundred that I think I shot just over him...." said it with a straight face and I thought he was joking...

....I still laugh about that one

I was 14 years old at the time. My mom was helping to buy a rifle for moi and brought me to Edmonton. At the counter of the store, when asked what I was interested in, I asked for an "authentic" stock... I meant synthetic but didn't know what I was talking about. A few customers chuckled, but not in a mean way.

While I was there, an order came in over the phone from a customer the owner knew well, it seemed. The order was for 50 fully automatic rifles, but fixed (i forget what it's called) to be semi-auto. I was like, umm... target practice much? uhh.. huh. Someone knew about zombies before zombies were cool, I think.

I read last year that the owner of that gun store commited suicide some years back. :( So yeah, there goes a happy thread.

catnthehat 09-21-2012 06:21 AM

The most rediculous thing I have ever heard for me personally, was when I phoned a shop in Edmonton about 20 years ago, looking for a trigger shoe for one of my match rifles.
" Nope, we don't sell them, trigger shoes are illegal!"
WTF??!! I was so stunned I forgot to ask him why, seeing how i owned three legal match rifles already that had them !!:sHa_sarcasticlol:

Heard from Wholesale employee years ago - Simmons is the best scope on the market.
They may be adequate, but they are a long way from the best.

Maybe they have the best profit margin ??

Here this one all the time even here. I don't shoot targets very well but I shoot real well in the field....Idiots....

catnthehat 09-21-2012 07:43 AM

"All I have ever used is a 243, never shot a deer less than 300 yards....."
Oh, I forgot this one " I have a buddy that can shoot a quarter at 200 yards every time - I've seen him do it!"
The guy apparently used a 7600 Remington and packed his own "special magnum" loads - 30'06 no less!

Was told I'd have parallax issues using an adjustable objective target scope on a rim fire.

"Thompson didn't sell many center fire rifles so they are going out of business"

"Hornady is discontinuing their reloading lines because they are only going to sell factory ammo."

"Weatherby makes ammunition?"

Sadly, all from the same person. The guy that you're praying someone else frees up before you have to talk to him. /facepalm

Clerk-"What can I help you with today?"

Customer-" I need 308 bullets"

Clerk- "What type and grain?"

Customer-"Whatever is cheapest"

Clerk-"For hunting or target?"

Customer-"Hunting"

Clerk hands box of bullets to customer-"Will these do?"

Customer looks confused "I asked for bullets, what are these?"

Clerk-" A box of 50 bullets, the cheapest softpoints that we have"

Customer-" I need bullets, I can't shoot these"
