Outdoor humorist Patrick McManus passes away

One of the funniest outdoor writers i ever read. I have most (if not all) of his books. I will have to dig them out this evening and reacquaint my self with classic characters such as his mentor Rancid Crabtree and friend Retch Sweeney.

RIP Pat.

I devoured his stuff when I was a young lad. I own every book he ever wrote, haven't cracked one in years. Not as funny as when I was young. Quite the cast of characters, his sister the troll was a personal favorite and his dog strange.

No disrespect, but I never heard of him. I must have been living in a cave at the time. What era was he writing? I may have been too old when he was writing.

I’ll admit to not having read any of his books, but I did read his regular humour columns in both Field & Stream & Outdoor Life.

He had a column called "The Last Laugh" on the back page of every Outdoor Life magazine for many years in the 70's- 80's

Sad to hear - always enjoyed his stories in the outdoor magazines, and have a couple of his books.

Best one I remember is about his gun rack - ALWAYS had 3 empty places in it. Used that excuse whenever he acquired a new gun - told the missus he was just filling up an empty space.

I used to love reading his columns. He will be missed!

And each was illustrated by Al Hirschfeld so I always looked for the 'NINA's when I was a kid.

I read most of his stories as a kid in the 80s and have read quite a few to my kids over the years. I can't get through "Never cry arp" without laughing to this day. And anything with Rancid Crabtree.
He will be missed

He was a writer in the days that their goal was to entertain the reader. These days the writers, for the most part, are look at me. Look what I can do. RIP Mr. McManus. You were in it for the “write” reasons.

Sad news. I can remember dad reading us "The Grasshopper Trap" at bedtime when I was about 12 or 13. McManus was a very funnyman.

Good Outdoor humorists are a rare breed and Mr. McManus was one of the best. Check out Bill Heavey if you need to laugh during your mourning...

My favorite author.

I read everything he wrote that I could get my hands on. I even have cassette tapes of some of his stories.

A sad day.

Rancid Crabtree will be happy to see him.

Rancid Crabtree 04-17-2018 08:42 PM

Very sorry to hear.
I'm obviously a big fan and have a few signed books here.

His humour was superb and intelligent. He was also a excellent writer even in his earlier factual works.

You can get some of his audio books on iTunes.
