Boiling Snares
 

Hi all looking for some advice of snare preparation. Attached are some pictures of snares I prepared today. I noticed the last few I boiled came out with more of a dull look. How much does everyone else boil theirs? Should I boil the sharper looking ones some more? How much does it make a difference?

Those look awful dark? I add a bit of baking soda, like a quarter of a box, when my snares are covered in water. just boil a short while 10 minutes and you are good! I think either batch you made are ok . Boil just enough to take the shine off .

Am I not seeing something here?

IT looks like you have stinger springs, but no trigger.

They look fine, no shine is what you need. I boil for 30 min with baking soda and then leave then outside for a couple months, I have boiled them with some Longwood dye after boiling in baking soda for setting in darker woods.

Im in a pinch this year end for some extra snares . I usually give them a light dust of spray paint to dull them , but wont have time to air them out and get the stink off . So I put them in a gallon tin can , filled with boiling water from a kettle and added a half box of soda . Snapped the lid on and shook it good a couple times over the course of 2 hrs . Let sit over night and this morning they look every bit as good and dull as those that I boiled last time . No more 10 minute boiling for me .

anyone else find you have to boil for hours to get the shine off?? for new snares i have to boil for about 5 - 6 hours to dull them. is it just my water? not enough baking soda?

Not enough baking soda in the water. Twenty to 30 minutes max.

I use about a cup of soda per gallon of water, 20 min boils

Similar. 3/4 a cup per gallon. 20-25 min .....

They're there, just hard to see with them being a wrapped up

Thanks everyone, sounds like they should work fine. Must of used alot more baking soda on the second batch.

Same as Hunter Dave and dagslaughter. 20 to 30 min lots of baking soda. I would say more of a simmer. If you boil too hard the water may come up and carry over.
Then you have to try and get the bakingsoda ring cleaned up before the old lady gets home. Or use a turkey fire propane burner. You may want to skim the oil off with a ladle .
