Spring Turkey has begun
 

Today's the first day of spring turkey down here, didn't get any action this
morning (can only hunt till noon) but 3 hens and this guy have been showing
up in the pasture anywhere from 9:30 to 1:30 for the last 3 days.
Got this picture from my back deck at 1:00 today, about 100 yards away.
Looks to have a 6-8" beard could be better.

Also wanted to mention I'm seeing a marked improvement of the vertical
hits on target shooting from upgrading my older stab (10+ year old 6") to a
12" B-Stinger with 2 one ounce weights on front, no stab on the back or to
the side. At all distances from 20 to 40 yards.

Highly recommend upgrading or at least trying a longer and newer stab for
hunting even if only going to 8" or 10", just add a quick disconnect to fit the
bow case and your good to go.

I'm very happy with the results I'm seeing in such a short time.

I have an Alberta turkey tag for this spring. Really looking forward to hunting them with my bow.

I am in the running to possibly draw a turkey tag in 2018, or maybe 2019. I do not know the wmu's that the tags are available in, being from the Edmonton area, I don't hunt south west Alberta. Is it primarily crown land, or a lot of private land? Would a guy need to do a scouting trip before the hunt, to try and secure permission on private land? Thanks for any help. Congrats on your harvest. Beautiful bird, should make for a tasty meal.

My bro's in Southern BC are on the go for Turkey Bird in a week and a 1/2. Gobble Gobble. Ha.

Blend in, sit still and take them as they come.

I'm on the Hog Gophers this spring as we try to thin out the herd.

Best of luck on the turkeys this spring, they can be tough buggers to get.
Sure is a lot of fun trying though. Kind of a cross between duck and pheasant
and deer hunting maybe.

I think my most memorable turkey hunt was the time I had yelped and gobbled
a tom with 3 hens from sunrise to 9:00am and was able to watch them working
toward me following a ridge about 200 yards across from the ridge I had my
blind and decoys set up on. They walked the ridge from the roost at river
below up and along side the ridge I was on until by 9:00am they were above
me and out of sight. The two ridges paralell each other.
It's very, very difficult to call a tom away from hens I know this, so when they made it above me and past me AND the gobble backs stopped, I was sure the game was over.

I about fell out of my chair.
Reached over and tugged the back portal cover open just a crack and there
he was in full strut behind a 15" dia. pine but I could see the head and neck
and about a good 9-10" beard.

I let go the portal cover and turned to pick up the bow from the bow holder
stake my left foot touched the box call on the ground it went SCREECH.
I heard leaves crunching and peaked out the portal, he was racin' back the
way he came in.

Never got a shot, but man what a hunt.

In the first maybe 3 years of calling I never knew for sure if it was my calls or
they just happened to be coming my direction anyway that the birds
came in. Sometimes they show up 20 to 45 mins. or longer after you stop
calling.

The hunt I mentioned in my reply above answered that question.
