re-barrel?
I inherited a Ruger M77 in 25-06 topped with a Leupold VX3 that would hit somewhere in a 4 foot circle. I cleaned the copper out of the barrel, Korth repaired the scope, now down to a 2 foot group. I free floated the barrel, repaired the crack in the wrist and had the action bedded. Now a 1 foot group. I lapped the rings, now at 6". My question is since I know little about Rugers, is it worth putting a new barrel on it or do I buy another since I now want a 25-06?

What a weird series of events.

If it is shooting that poorly I would first look to see if the barrel
Is damaged near the muzzle. 2nd check to see if barrel is plain old shot out. I am a fan of the Ruger M-77 and would rebarrel it. |
re-barrel
I had thought of using as a blind gun-sharpening the barrel and throwing it at the game. It belonged to an uncle who I think ran over it.

Take the action to a competent gunsmith and see if it is worth re-barreling (might be damaged). A good barrel put on a rifle by a competent gunsmith almost always shoots better than factory.

X2, go see a gunsmith and see if it’s worth rebarreling.
It would help if you said where you live, so some recommendations could be made for a gunsmith close to you. |
If this is the only rifle you have every shot. Maybe take some one else with you and let him shot it . Also have you tried different bullets

6” gain in accuracy @100 yds by lapping rings?
You won’t find the fix on the interweb. A smith would have to tear it down for a deep dive inspection. |
re-barrel
I have a few other's in that caliber range including a swede made in the 50s that will shoot 1/2". Have tried 4 different brands of ammo and 2 handloads. I will have a smith look at it. Thanks all, I just was not too sure of the Ruger.

Trucks, tires , and firearms not a good combo 😁

re barrel
You are right Moo, after lapping the rings I put a scope on that I know to be reliable.

On my M77 action screw torque make a difference on accuracy difference.

re-barrel
Custom Gun Worx did the bedding and did speak to me of the torque settings he had used. I have not altered those. Thanks, I will look at any ideas but it is looking as tho it will be a trip down to see Bob. I feel like I am out of cheap options.

Some of those older Rugers have a slower twist rate that is terrible at stabilizing the heavier bullets of today.
I have a friend who has one that won't shoot the longer( heavier) bullets at all. The lighter (shorter) bullets work great. I would take it to Bob and tell him what it is doing and let him go over it. Cat |
Ruger 77’s are great!!
Order a new barrel from IBI, or one of the barrel makers in Alberta and have a good Gunsmith install it. You will have that rifle shooting bug holes in no time!! |
re- barrel
I was hoping to keep it original but since it now weighs about 400 pounds and will still have that fence post of a stock, I guess I'll talk to Bob. The trigger feels pretty OK to me but the weight may have something to do with that.
